Recap / The Ghost and Molly McGee S2 E14 One Hundred Percent Molly McGee

Go To

Air date: 5/20/2023

When Molly's Thai cousin visits, Molly questions whether she is "Asian enough" for her own family.

Tropes:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Molly feels left out from the rest of her family over how fluent they are in Thai in stark contrast to her, only knowing basic Thai greetings and having learned the rest of her culture overnight through extensive reading. Even Pete knows at least one Thai expression when he was otherwise as inept to the culture as Molly.
  • An Aesop:
    • Don't let your differences make you feel isolated from the rest of your family.
    • Don't feel pressured to change yourself just to fit in; be yourself.
    • It's okay to be different.
  • Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce: When Molly eats the spicy Thai snacks offered to her by Uncle David, she reacts with extreme discomfort and chugs down a lot of milk cartons to ease the pain.
  • Bottle Episode: Aside from the classroom scene at the beginning, the episode takes place at Molly's house.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Grandma Nin reminds the McGees that her sister made fun of her for being "too American" when she moved to Los Angeles.
  • Fun with Subtitles: Molly tries to follow the family's Thai conversation over dinner, but as she gets overwhelmed, the subtitles pile up under her. (Although, the the translation captions do not appear in the Disney+ version.)
  • Given Name Reveal: Molly's mother's maiden name (and Grandma Nin's surname) is revealed to be "Suksai".
  • Title Drop: The title is mentioned at the end when Molly embraces that she is "100% Molly McGee".
  • Unaffected by Spice: Uncle David, Cousin Emmie and all the McGees but Molly and Pete eat spicy foods without any sensitive reactions.
