Recap / The Emperor's New School S1 E1 "Rabbit Face"

Go To

Due to not taking gym class seriously, Kuzco is given an assignment to beat Kronk in a race. Yzma, determined to make sure Kuzco fails, plots to turn him into a turtle. However, because she doesn't label her potions, Kronk ends up giving him a potion that turns him into a rabbit instead.

Kuzco is horrified at first. Soon though, he realizes that he can move a lot faster as a rabbit. With this, he manages to beat Kronk and pass his assignment.

This episode contains the following examples:

  • An Aesop: Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses and use them to the best of your abilities.
  • Animorphism: Yzma intended to give Kuzco a potion which turns him into a turtle so he loses the race against Kronk; thanks to her lack of labelling, he drinks the rabbit potion instead and becomes increasingly fast.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Kuzco struggles to make it up a flight of stairs while Kronk proves to be an athlete. As such, Yzma didn't really need to get involved for Kuzco to fail. Instead, she plots to turn him into a turtle only to turn him into a rabbit and give him the win he needed. Lampshaded by Kronk.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Kuzco takes off his pants to show off his dimples, revealing his underwear with his face on it.
  • How We Got Here: The setting of the plot is Kuzco explaining to the audience why he's a rabbit feeling sorry for itself.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Kuzco gets back at Yzma for nearly sabotaging his chances at winning the race by putting... something unsavory in her salad.
  • Not Quite Back to Normal: While the potion does wear off, Kuzco mentions he now has a craving for carrots.
  • Old-Timey Cinema Countdown: The post-episode credits have a grey-blue circular countdown that goes from 8 to 3.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Pacha points out how he'll have to "Crank. Things. Up." if Kuzco's going to get in shape fast.
  • That Russian Squat Dance: When Kuzco gets a little more experience with the jump rope, he starts doing the squat dance.
  • Training Montage: A montage is shown halfway through the episode to show how Kuzco's teached how to pull a cart and does other activities.
  • Unimpressive Progress Reveal: When Kuzco is seen going upstairs fo the first time, he pushes himself to the limit before it's shown he hasn't made a single step.
