"Unlawful" is the sixth episode of season 2 of The Chosen.

Matthew and Simon try to get along as they search for Mary in dark places. The group fears for Mary as they struggle with lack of food and bad news about John the Baptist. Meanwhile, Jesus continues to upset Pharisees across multiple regions.

This episode provides examples of:

  • "Awkward Silence" Entrance: Peter wants to take the lead when searching for Mary Magdalene in the tavern, but Matthew calls out to the crowd. The crowd is suddenly silent as the Samaritans stare at the "Hebrew dogs" in their tavern.
  • Flashback: The episode opens with Ahimelech giving David the bread of the Presence (1 Samuel 21:1-6).
  • Healing Hands: Jesus once again demonstrates this by healing the crippled arm of a member of the audience of a sermon. Notable in that he does it right in front of the holy men running the sermon, showing them that he is the genuine son of God in the flesh.
  • Morning Routine: The disciples do various things to get ready in the morning, and several observe Simon the Zealot performing his martial arts exercises.
  • Never Split the Party: Matthew suggest that they could cover more ground in their search for Mary Magdalene if they split up. Peter insists on staying together.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Another example of the mundane skills that Matthew never learned: He didn't realize that he needed to put down new hay before sleeping in the barn
  • Tears of Remorse: Plenty during Mary Magdalene's reunion with Jesus.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Jesus sent Matthew and Simon to search for Mary Magdalene, and they must work together.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Mary turns to the side when she throws up, so the camera sees none of it.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Matthew and Simon find Mary Magdalene, she says she can't go back any more. Matthew encourages her by describing how much of a difference she has made in many of their lives. Peter even joins in.
