Recap / The Americans S 3 E 6 Born Again

Go To

Paige gets baptized, which she feels good about, but Elizabeth and Philip still feel uncomfortable about. Philip, who still doesn't want Paige to be recruited for the Centre, tells Paige to stick up for herself, but Paige doesn't get the message he's trying to convey, and thinks he's just trying to talk her out of being involved with the church. She also tells Elizabeth how she feels about praying, which she says calms her. Gabriel tells Elizabeth it's time to get serious about recruiting Paige, and Elizabeth starts to open up with Paige about how she used to be involved with the Civil Rights Movement to prove she shares Paige's ideals.

Nina tells Evi more about her past, and Evi in turn tells Nina she was supposed to meet her boyfriend in Brussels. This information gets Nina out of the jail cell, and Evi gets taken away by the guards.

Philip continues to see Kimberly, and perhaps thinking of Paige, tells Kimberly about his past "sins" and asks her to pray with him. Surprisingly, she agrees to do so, and says it was amazing. However, Philip is not happy about the fact Gabriel wants him to see Kimberly every week.

Elsewhere, Stan goes out on a date with Tori (and she comes to eat with him at the Jennings' house), but he's still hung up on Sandra, to the point when Aderholt tells him about Stan's former partner being dead, he invites Sandra to go to the funeral, but she puts him off.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Back: Elizabeth tells Paige about Gregory and what he meant to her.
    • Nina tells Evi about Oleg and Stan.
    • Gabriel tells Philip Irina has been captured in Brazil.
  • Continuity Nod: We see Elizabeth smoking (in the garage), which she's done before.
    • Aderholt tells Martha the FBI will no longer be putting confidential documents in the Mail Robot anymore.
  • Don't Look At Me: Inverted; Evi knows something's up when Nina, back in their cell, won't look at her, and begs Nina to look at her, even as she's being dragged from the cell.
  • Foreshadowing: Hans tells Elizabeth about a South African student who he thinks is working with the CIA (and Gabriel confirms Hans' suspicions when he meets with Elizabeth later), which becomes important over the next couple of episodes.
  • Shout-Out: Though we don't get to hear it, Philip plays Kimberly some Pink Floyd on her Walkman.
