The Obelisk of Night

Directed by: Johnny Castuciano

Written by: Greg White

Now knowing that the Obelisk of Night is located in San Lorenzo, are eager to get back and stop the Bloodwolf once and for all, especially as an ominous sunset looms over San Lorenzo, indicating that the arrival of the Bloodwolf is impending.

Unfortunately, El Moco and his band of thieves have taken over San Lorenzo thanks to The Duchess' magic suit of armor. Desperate to get rid of him before the Bloodwolf arrives, Puss uses a random magical spell which turns out to be a shrinking spell, allowing him to enter the suit of armor and disassemble it from the inside.

With that task finished, Puss wastes no time in searching the town for the Obelisk of Night, which is eventually located in an underground chamber within the San Lorenzo Treasure Vault. The Obelisk details that the Chosen One must wear the Crown of Souls and touch their hand to the Obelisk, and Puss wastes no time in doing so... only for nothing to happen.

After several tries, Artephius notices that the paw print on the Obelisk only has four fingers on it; Puss in Boots has five fingers. Puss is ready to cut off one of his fingers in order to fulfill the prophecy, but Dulcina holds up her hand, she has four fingered hands. Dulcinea is the one from the prophecy.

Puss in Boots: Of course you are. The Purest of Heart, who could that be but you? All this time, I thought I was the great hero! But it's you...
Dulcinea: You are a great hero!

Dulcinea places her hand on the Obelisk and it activates, but the result is more ominous than expected. A pillar of red light erupts from the obelisk and into the sun, and Dulcinea disappears before Puss in Boots' eyes. Uli cackles at the trick he has just played; the Crown and the Obelisk aren't used to stop the Bloodwolf; they are used to complete the summoning of the Bloodwolf. A swarm of bat-wolf monsters begins pouring out of the portal.

The Bloodwolf has arrived.

Tropes:

  • Bat Out of Hell: Wolves with bat wings pour out of the Netherworld portal.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: While both El Moco and the Duchess' magic suit of armor have played important roles in moving the plot to this point, the situation has grown so far beyond either of them Puss doesn't even want to bother to fight them and pleads for El Moco to just leave him alone to deal with the Bloodwolf.
  • Disney Death: Puss in Boots appears to have been vaporized by El Moco's attack, but Puss actually dodged by activating a shrinking spell.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Dulcinea has a nightmare about being in a black-and-white version of San Lorenzo, surrounded by copies of herself with black eyes.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: It is a plot point that Dulcinea has these but Puss does not.
  • Hellgate: What the Obelisk of Night and the Crown of Souls actually do is open one of these in San Lorenzo.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Duchess reveals one of her newly awakened powers is the ability to detect and differentiate the energies of magical artifacts, making her the ideal candidate to divine out the location of the Obelisk if it is in the treasury.
  • One Size Fits All: The Crown of Souls is sized for an adult human; it is so large Puss has to hold it on his shoulders and he easily slips through it if he doesn't. For the Chosen One though, it magically resizes to fit her head.
  • Only the Pure of Heart: The Chosen One is the cat with the purest heart.
  • Red Sky, Take Warning: The first sign that the Crown of Souls ritual is not what it seems is that it turns the sky dark red.
  • Weird Sun: The sun begins setting much larger than normal which is the sign of the Bloodwolf's impending arrival. The Obelisk of Night then blasts the Sun with energy, turning it an extremely dark red to herald the Bloodwolf's actual summoning.
  • Wham Episode: Just like the spell to restore the barrier to San Lorenzo, Uli lied about the purpose of the Crown of Souls. It is not used to defeat the Bloodwolf, it is used to complete the ritual to summon the Bloodwolf, seemingly killing Dulcinea in the process.
