Recap / Sex Education S 1 E 5 Episode 5

Go To

Drama erupts as a photo of a girl's genitals circulates among the students. Otis and Maeve discover that it belongs to Ruby, but due to her bitchiness the number of suspects is legion. As Eric celebrates his birthday, he and Otis arrange to see Hedwig and the Angry Itch in London while dressed in drag, only for Maeve to drag Otis into solving the mystery of the revenge porn at the last minute. Maeve herself had just blown off a dinner with Jackson and his parents, to his disappointment.Otis, Maeve and the Untouchables gather at Aimee's house, while Aimee hits it off with Steve. After some deduction, Maeve realises the culprit must have been a girl. Olivia then confesses, as she wanted to humble Ruby. The two girls then talk things out and the feud is called off.

Eric finds himself alone in London, where his phone and wallet get stolen. Forced to walk home still in cosplay, Eric is accosted by a pair of thugs who beat him up on the assumption he's a transwoman. Eric rushes to the Milburn house where Jean tends to him. When Otis comes home, Eric rages at his friend for ditching him to hang out with a girl, tarnishing their friendship.

Tropes

  • Break the Cutie: This is the episode where Eric's cheery demeanour is shattered.
  • Hate Sink: The two thugs that beat up Eric are given absolutely no sympathetic qualities. When they mistake him for a girl because of his costume, it's implied they're sexual predators.
  • I Am Spartacus: Headmaster Groff finds out about the vagina photo and assumes it was an exhibitionist who needs to be disciplined. He calls an assembly and demands the guilty party stand up, but since Ruby and Olivia have patched things up, Olivia takes the hit. This is enough to inspire all the girls (and Jackson) to take the blame in solidarity. Feeling empowered by the gesture, Ruby stands with them.
  • Jerkass Ball:
    • This episode being Otis' first instance of this, selfishly abandoning Eric on his 17th birthday, and later accusing him of being attention-seeking.
    • Maeve too. She pressured Otis into therapizing Ruby, without much consideration for his need to meet Eric.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Maeve shouldn't have pressured Otis into missing his best friend's birthday, she was 100 percent right that no one deserves the treatment she's had to put up with for four years, not even someone as nasty as Ruby.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Subverted. Maeve dresses in a non-threatening manner when meeting Jackson's parents. The look really doesn't suit her.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Eric swaps his colourful wardrobe for drab earth tones in a fit of self-loathing.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: During their argument, Eric calls Otis out on his It's All About Me tendencies.
