Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 2 E 16 Aliens Among Us

Go To

Sheriff Stone enlists the aid of Mystery Incorporated to investigate his memories of being abducted by aliens.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Breather Episode: This episode is mainly light, especially after what happened the last episode.
  • The Cameo: Brad and Judy make cameos.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Pretty much all the strange happenings that suggested aliens were invading were all untimely coincidences. The glowing orb was a lost weather balloon, the blackout was caused by a surge from too many people turning of the AC simultaneously, and the crop circles was a farmer writing "I Love You" to his wife for their anniversary.
  • The Greys: What the Sheriff believes he's been abducted by.
  • Hypocritical Humor: We have Scooby Doo complaining that Stone could have made himself clearer. Stone calls him on it.
  • Insistent Terminology: When Velma reveals that the crop circle was really just the work of a farmer writing "I love you" in his field for his anniversary, Daphne is adamant that the "O" was the one in "love" and not "you".
  • Lampshade Hanging: "Usually we all recognize the bad guys and shout out their name in unison."
  • Monster of the Week: The Grey, the Reptoid, and the Nordic Alien, three mysterious beings from outer space.
  • Oireland: the actual criminals are three Irish career criminals who figured that no one would report getting robbed by aliens. Notably, the first person the father of the trio stole from appears to have been a leprechaun, with him stealing his cauldron of gold
  • Shout-Out: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    • Also, one of the aliens abducts and uses the Space Kook armor.
    • Several lines in this episode are almost verbatim quotes from The X-Files, including Velma and her mother's exchange about believing in the fantastic and the planet Venus, and one about aliens having been on Earth for a long time. Not to mention that the nasal implant and use of regression hypnosis are staples of X-Files mythology.
  • Trash the Set: Brad and Judy burn down Mystery Incorporated’s office while they’re out digging up the first key.

Shaggy: Like, what does an old gun have to do with a key?
Fred: No idea, Shag, but we're not gonna figure it out here. I say we head back to...
<Cut to City Hall engulfed in fire>
Mystery Incorporated: Our Office!
Daphne: What happened?
Fireman: No idea, it's a mystery. Good thing nobody was inside, somebody could've gotten really hurt.
