Recap / Sailor Moon Ep 18 Shingos Love The Grieving Doll

Go To

(DiC Episode: "Dangerous Dollies")

Shingo's friend Mika is chosen as Nephrite's target due to her skill at making French-style dolls. As she becomes increasingly obsessed with making and finishing her dolls, both her mother and Shingo become increasingly concerned.

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Title: From the DIC dub: Dangerous Dollies.
  • Cool Big Sis: While Usagi makes it clear she won't allow Shingo to weasel out of apologizing to Mika, she does try to listen to his worries about her later behavior and proposes he make her a gift to go with the apology. She gets angrier when Jumeau destroys the clay figure Shingo tried to give to Mika.
  • Creepy Doll: This might as well be called "Creepy Doll: The Episode." Nephrite's influence on Mika causes all the dolls she creates to sport terrifying grins at random moments before the doll youma Jumeau finally emerges. They get even creepier when she utilizes them as weapons, at which point we see Mika's dolls have fangs.
  • Don't Tell Mama: Usagi blackmails her brother into apologizing to Mika by threatening to let their parents know what he did.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Mika's mother completely misses how unsubtly creepy Nephrite is as Masato Sanjouin, even when he evilly smirks right in front of her.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Sailor Mars initially snarks about arriving too early when Sailor Moon was fighting Jumeau, but as soon as the doll monster attacks Sailor Moon again Mars gets visibly pissed off and unleashes Fire Soul.
  • Nice Girl: The two girls who approach Usagi about what Shingo did. The episode never clarifies if they were Mika's friends or not, but they were both appalled at what happened and reached out to Usagi because they believed she was the person who could do something about it.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Surprisingly, Usagi initially finds the idea of a haunted doll to be sort of exciting while Luna is thoroughly creeped out. Usagi loses her enthusiasm when she realizes this is likely a Dark Kingdom plot.
  • Pushover Parents: Mika's mother only barely tries to intervene as her daughter becomes obsessed with crafting dolls, to the point she still allows her to finish the order for Nephrite and present them at the next doll exhibition.
  • Swapped Roles: Shingo frequently considers his sister an embarrassment and espouses that he's more mature than her, but here Usagi's enraged when she finds out how he treated Mika and repeatedly holds him to task until he apologizes to her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Usagi is livid when she finds out about Shingo rudely rejecting and accidentally breaking Mika's prize-winning doll without ever apologizing. She makes it clear he is going to atone for this and threatens to tell both their parents unless he apologizes to Mika.
