You Monster! How dare you dress up in a tuxedo just to toy with an innocent girl's feelings?! I'm never, ever, EVER going to forgive you for this! You hear me?! I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Who Is That Masked Man?")

Romance is on every girl's mind as they all receive love letters from Tuxedo Mask himself! Little do they know is that it's a new trap by Nephrite to lure out Sailor Moon by pretending to be her mysterious partner. And to make matters worse, it looks like Naru's about to take the bait!

Tropes in this episode include:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Nephrite succeeds in stealing Naru's energy and is praised by Queen Beryl due to it's enriching quality. From then on, Nephrite decides to exploit her love for him to further his agenda.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sailor Mercury and Mars show up to save Moon and Tuxedo Mask from falling to their deaths.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Rather then opening the elevator doors to ensure that his hated enemies died in the crash and did not escape, Nephrite decides to have an Evil Laugh and return to the Dark Kingdom.
  • Cats Are Mean: Nephrite summons the lion youma Regulus to devour Sailor Moon.
  • Death Trap: Nephrite manages to trick Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask into an elevator that's set to be dropped after reaching it's top floor.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Usagi admits that going to the mall alone without either of her friends was not her smartest decision.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Naru is instantly swayed by the adult Nephrite who persuades her to see him alone at night so he can steal her energy. This is clear and disturbing parallel to predatory men who manipulate underage girls only to take advantage of them.
  • Dub Name Change: Regulus, the lion monster Nephrite summons, is renamed "Leo the Lion" in the DiC English dub.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Miss Haruna is secretly jealous that she didn't get a love letter, unlike all her girl students.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Tuxedo Mask informs Sailor Moon that he believes that they met before but he can't remember the exact details.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: While Mamoru plays the crane machine, some of the chibi dolls resemble Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask, Queen Beryl and Sailor V.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: Nephrite hoped to invoke this by using Sailor Moon's love for Tuxedo Mask to trap and destroy her.
  • Internal Reveal: Usagi learns that Masato Sanjoin is Nephrite, the second member of the Four Heavenly Kings.
  • Just Between You and Me: Nephrite explains his Death Trap to Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask over the intercom of the elevator.
Nephrite(DiC): According to the laws of gravity what goes up must come down, and when that happens you're going to be a Sailor pancake at the bottom of the elevator shaft!
  • Lipstick-and-Load Montage: Usagi goes through a step-by-step tutorial on how to get ready for your first date.
  • Love Letter: The theme of the day is based on love letters written by Nephrite pretending to be Tuxedo Mask.
  • Never Heard That One Before: Zoisite comments that Nephrite boasting about defeating Sailor Moon is the same song and dance Jadeite performed when he was in charge.
  • No-Sell: Moon Tiara Action has no effect on Regulus.
  • Painful Transformation: Mamoru gains serious headaches when his Tuxedo Mask persona pushes through.
  • Pet the Dog: Nephrite erases Naru’s memory of being attacked by him.
  • Precocious Crush: Naru ends up having a crush on Masato Sanjoin, Nephrite's adult human disguise.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Haruna warns her students that the Tuxedo Mask letters might be from someone dangerous, and the girls shouldn't actually follow their instructions. She is completely correct in saying this, but Haruna's only doing so because she's salty she didn't get one too.
  • Skewed Priorities: Rei instantly gets out of bed after hearing that Usagi went by herself to the mall at night to see Tuxedo Mask.
  • Spot the Imposter: Usagi sees through Nephrite's Tuxedo Mask disguise as he's draining Naru of her love energy proclaiming that she knows her true love when she sees him.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The episode opens with Nephrite discovering Sailor Moon's weakness followed by Queen Beryl yelling at her hench-losers like every episode.
  • Wham Shot: The audience sees Mamoru transform into Tuxedo Mask for the first time.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Regulus vanishes, not actually being destroyed in battle, and never reappears during the Dark Kingdom arc. It can be assumed Regulus perished when the Dark Kingdom was permanently destroyed.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Rei ends up bedridden with a surprise flu. Because of this, she couldn't sense any negative energy from the love letter she received.
  • Wrong Assumption: Nephrite instantly believes that Naru is Sailor Moon for the fact that she boldly went up to him and asked if he was Tuxedo Mask.
