Recap / Rupert S 01 E 04 Rupert And The Purple Cakes

Go To

When Podgy stays with the Bears while his parents take a cruise, he and Rupert run into the Professor just as he’s testing out his new accidental invention — cakes that make you float. Turns out, they come in handy when fighting pirates...

First appearances of Podgy and The Professor and the first time Rupert says “I have a plan.”

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Discovery: The Professor unintentionally creates the gravity-defying purple cakes while trying to create fast-rising yeast.
  • Character Development: Rupert acts more proactive on this adventure than on the previous three, when he decides to stop the pirates’ attack, and shows his Guile Hero skills for the first time when he tricks their guard.
  • Deadly Dodging: The seagull saves Rupert from getting shot by a cannonball... which then hits the pirates’ longboat.
  • Idiot Ball: Podgy has no problem eating strange-looking cakes he found in the woods with no idea what they are. He’s lucky the only consequence was floating.
  • It's a Small World, After All: The ship the pirates are planning to rob just happens to be the cruise ship Podgy’s parents are on.
  • It's All My Fault: The Professor blames himself at the end for creating the cakes that led to Podgy and Rupert almost getting killed by pirates. To Podgy’s credit, he admits it’s actually his fault for eating them in the first place.
  • Not Quite Flight: The Professor’s concoction makes things float. When the thing is alive, they can control their direction and move themselves through the air like they’re flying even though they technically aren’t.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Rupert never gets mad. Podgy is the first person we ever see do something stupid enough to anger the ultimate Nice Guy (“You FOUND them?!”).
