Recap / RuneScape Rune Mythos

Go To

Having grasped the basics of Necromancy after a little practice, Malignius Mortifer is encouraged by Death to share more secrets with the player. He gives them a short lecture on necrotic runes, necromantic incantations and the source of Necromancy, before teaching the player a new ritual to imbue pure essence with necromantic energy. Once the player creates impure essence, Malignius directs them to a dark portal to the north-east of Um, where they can craft necrotic runes using the idols inside.

The player enters the portal after locating it, only to find Rasial waiting inside, dissapointed that it took them so long to reach the place. Being more than familiar with the atmosphere of Erebus, the player asks Rasial if that's their current location, only for Rasial to reassure them that the similarity is only due to the pocket dimension they are in being created from a concentration of necromantic elements drawn from Erebus proper, one which he created himself. Rasial then mockingly addresses the player as World Guardian, holding them responsible for an unspoken mess they made, and warns them not to disappoint him before taking his leave.

The player then returns to Malignius after crafting spirit runes, after which he teaches the player the Lesser Bone Shield incantation.

With that, quest complete!

Tropes

  • Buffy Speak: According to Malignius, when enough necromantic energy builds up in places of death, "undead whackiness" ensues.
  • Eldritch Location: The pocket dimension containing the necromantic rune altars is eerily similar to Erebus. Rasial explains that this is no coincidence, since he created it himself using necromantic elements taken from Erebus.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Malignius elaborates on what would happen if someone attempted to channel necromantic energy without proper protection.
Malignius: And without a death guard, that necromantic energy would slowly corrupt you, like gangrene...or a really severe allergic reaction to mushrooms. It's why you don't see many necromancers; most beginners, er, shall we say...end?
Player: I see - learn quick or die trying.
  • Justified Tutorial: The quest owes its brevity to being a condensed tutorial for imbuing impure essence, then using it to craft necromantic runes. The player is left to learn incantations on their own afterwards.
  • Magic A Is Magic A:
  • Mr. Exposition:
    • Malignius explains a few of the more advanced elements of Necromancy to help the player learn about incantations.
    • Rasial elaborates on the nature of the necromantic rune altars, which he created from elements taken from Erebus, and adds that Guthix would never have dared to do so.
  • The Scottish Trope: For whatever reason, Malignius tries to invoke this trope on Rasial. He eventually drops it.
Malignius: I got the distinct impression that 'he' made them.
    Player: Who?
Malignius: An educated guess would suggest an old and powerful necromancer. It was probably 'the First Necromancer'.
Player: You can say his name, you know. It's not some big secret. I guess you haven't met him yet...
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Malignius reveals he is allergic to mushrooms.
  • Well, This Is Not That Trope: Malignius gives a brief explanation about the relationship between magic and anima, before adding thet Necromancy doesn't come from there.
