Recap / Regular Show S 03 Ep 01 Stick Hockey

Go To

Mordecai and Rigby set out to find their stick hockey game after Benson gives it to a thrift shop, insisting it was for the better, but the duo want it back, which soon leads to a contest that Benson must beat in order to get all three back.

Stick Hockey provides examples of...

  • Absurdly High-Stakes Game: There is an underground Stick Hockey circuit with the arena surrounded by a flaming moat and contestants being allowed to execute each other during a match. Mordecai and Rigby make it all the way until the final match against Chong.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Benson used to be a coach and player of Stick Hockey until his student Dave was killed during a match.
  • Disappointed in You: When Benson goes back on his promise, which is to let Mordecai and Rigby play Stick Hockey if they scrape gum off all over the park, by selling the stick hockey table to a thrift store because he didn't trust them to do their task. Mordecai and Rigby are furious at Benson, and when he tries asking Skips and Pops to back him up, they reply that they, too, are disappointed with Benson for going back on this promise. This is because he is the boss, and they expect him to uphold his end of the bargain.
  • Get Out!: While riding with Mordecai and Rigby, Benson keeps defending his decision on getting rid of the Stick Hockey table. They aren't having any of it, and they dump Benson out of the cart, and the two look for the table themselves, leaving Benson to walk all the back to the Park by himself.
  • I Lied: Benson tells Mordecai and Rigby that he won't get rid of the hockey game and will let them continue to play stick hockey if they scrape gum stuck to surfaces around the Park. However, while they are off doing it, he has the game table shipped off to an antique shop. This infuriates the two that they can't play it anymore and that their boss went against his word.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Benson just ships the game anyway because he assumes the duo wouldn't actually be able to do scrape up gum across the park. When they come back, Benson says there's no way they actually did it, only for them to throw their bucket full of scraped gum at him.
  • Off with His Head!: This is the way that Dave is killed. He barely lives long enough to say his last words before dying right in Benson's hands.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The tournament bracket in the background of the underground circuit shows that Mordecai and Rigby did well enough to face Chong in the finals.
  • On Second Thought: Mordecai and Rigby are ecstatic about Stick Hockey, thinking it would be a great thing to do. However, after hearing Benson's personal tale about the game that involved a partner of his getting KILLED, the two decide not to make it a part-time thing.
  • Radish Cure: Although the team succeeded in retrieving the stick hockey table, Mordecai and Rigby's near-death experience with the game at an underground stick hockey tournament puts them off the game for good.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Benson gets back to the Park house, he complains to Pops and Skips that Mordecai and Rigby just dumped him out on the road and made him get back home all by himself. Benson, outraged, asks if they can believe it. Pops and Skips reply that, yeah, they CAN, as they are not surprised because Benson went back on his word earlier with Mordecai and Rigby.
