Team Rocket hacks the transfer of several of Ash's Pokémon as he calls up the reserves for the Lily of the Valley Conference. Ash ends up having to hunt down his reserves one by one.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- The Bus Came Back: Ash calls in all of his reserves at Oak's lab for a quick reunion; Corphish, Totodile, Snorlax, Bayleef (an accident, it was supposed to be Heracross) and Cyndaquil for the first batch, and the rest in a montage.
- Deus Exit Machina:
- Because of the premise of the episode, Ash's Sinnoh roster is MIA while Ash and friends try to find the missing Pokémon from Oak's lab. Oddly enough, though, Dawn and Brock didn't bother sending their own Pokémon out to help with the search.
- Ash calls out his Snorlax to deal with Team Rocket's Humongous Mecha again, except Snorlax is asleep.
- Hope Spot: Cyndaquil jumps for joy when it saw Bayleef slice away the limbs of Team Rocket's mecha, but goes Oh, Crap! again when the mech sprouts more limbs.
- Never Recycle Your Schemes: Averted, the Rockets sabotage a Pokéball transport yet again.
- Took a Level in Badass: Cyndaquil finally evolves into a Quilava here, and even learns the powerful Eruption attack in the process!
