Lucas returns from Las Vegas to face a tragedy, as Nathan and Haley struggle to find a way to help Jamie understand the death of someone close to them.

- Downer Beginning: The episode opens to Skills arriving at Lucas and Peyton’s home in the middle of the night, and asking if it’s true that Quentin was murdered; the scenes that immediately follow show an unaware Nathan waiting for Q at the River Court before Haley arrives to break the news, and the Ravens arriving at practice as Lucas and Skills prepare to break the news to the team.
- Downer Ending: The episode ends with Q's funeral, and Jamie placing his cape on Q's casket after everyone else has left.
- Empty Chair Memorial: When Sam first enters Haley's class, she sits at the first empty desk she sees before being asked to move to a different seat by Haley as that one belonged to Q. By the end of the episode, Haley and the rest of the class have written tributes to Quetin on his desk.

- Parental Abandonment: Whilst it's never directly mentioned, Quentin's father is conspicuously absent from all of the photographs in the Fields home.
- Out-of-Character Alert: Brooke going off on a tangent about how there’s no justice in the world and quoting some macabre statistics provokes concerned looks from the rest of her friends.
- Spotting the Thread: Haley identifies Sam as Brooke's shoplifter because she recognises the shirt that was stolen.
- There Are No Therapists: Averted - after Brooke’s rant about there being no justice in the world, Haley offers Brooke the number of the therapist that she and Nathan saw after Jamie’s abduction.
