Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E38: "Fugitive Flowers 1"

Go To

Masquerade and Whizzer are enjoying a day out in Dream Valley when they hear a loud commotion. Following the noises, they find a number of giant crabs tearing down trees and tearing up the ground, and when they ask what precisely they are doing they claim to be looking for creatures named "flories". The crabs bluntly refuse to explain themselves further and continue with their search.

Meanwhile, a group of humanoid flowers is fleeing for their lives and desperate for water and fertile soil. They come across Posey's garden and decide that it's the perfect place to rest and recover, and beg her to let them in and protect them from the evil crabnasties that have been chasing and trying to enslave them. When the crabnasties arrive and try to get the flories, trampling over most of Posey's garden in the meanwhile, they're quickly defeated by Megan and the ponies and imprisoned in a nearby cave. The crabnasty leader tries to explain that he and his men are police officers, and that the flories are escaped convicts who destroy whole ecologies. Posey refuses to believe them — after all, from where she's standing, the flories did no harm and the crabnasties destroyed her whole garden — while the others remain unconvinced either way and decide to investigate.

That night, the flories wake up in the flowerbed where they've been put and reveal their true colors as they plan to drain the nutrients and water from all of dream valley. They waste no time in doing so, growing large and strong even as the garden withers. Masquerade, who had snuck by to investigate them, is quickly spotted as her plant cover rots away, and is swiftly captured by the flories.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Antagonist Title: The episode is named after the Flories, its primary villains.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Masquerade bound and helpless in the flories' vines, and dragged offscreen as the flowers gloat.
  • Conspicuously Light Patch: A panoramic shot of Dream Valley is, as usual for the show, mostly a hand-drawn painting, with the exception of a single notably cel-shaded tree in the distance, which also stands out for being larger and more individually detailed than the fuzzy mass of forest around it. Sure enough, at the end of the shot, the tree gets knocked over to mark the Crabnasties' blundering through the woods.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: When they see the flowerbed Posey prepared for them, a florie comments that with it "we'd be back on our roots in no time!"
  • Poor Communication Kills: A lot of trouble could have been avoided if the crabnasties had taken a bit of time to explain who the flories were, what they looked like and why they were searching for them.
  • You Were Trying Too Hard: Cherries Jubilee struggles to push a boulder onto the Crabnasties, who are attacking Posey's garden in order to get at the Flores, who have taken refuge there. It finally tips over the edge of the hill and down the slope when she gives up and prepares to walk off in a huff.
