Tom Meeks, a soldier at Fort York, is found murdered in the Don Valley. After another soldier is found murdered Detective Murdoch believes that someone is hunting the men and he begins to investigate the military, which is met with great opposition.

Tropes:

  • False Flag Operation: Major Cole and his squad attack a settlement of British civilians and pass it off as the work of a Boer militia in order to provide a Pretext for War.
  • Government Drug Enforcement: Cole had his men use methamphetamine to give them more stamina during fight.
  • He Knows Too Much: the culprit was hunted down by Cole and his men because he knew too much about the False Flag Operation.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: The Toronto Constabulary clashed with the Army over has jurisdiction over the case, with Inspector Brackenried threatening to arrest Colonel Haywood for obstruction of justice at on point.
  • Karma Houdini: Branckenreid muses that Cole won't get punished beyond a slap on the wrist, though he does get shot by the father of the man who lost his sanity thanks to Cole's actions
  • Knight Templar: Major Cole explained he had to do his actions for the sake of The British Empire.
  • Pretext for War: Major Cole ordered his squad to attack a British settlement in the Transvaal to stir up anti-Boer sentiment, before launcing an unsanctioned attack on a Boer militia.
  • Super Serum: Methamphetamine has been doled out to commando members, to make them more efficient at fighting at the cost of their sanity.
  • Super-Soldier: The dead soldiers were members of a "kommando", a new mobile infantry unit.
  • Tontine: The murdered soldiers were all members of a tontine, which muddies the waters as to motive.
