Recap / Murdoch Mysteries S 3 E 2 The Great Wall

Go To

Murdoch investigates when a detective is murdered and a Chinese man is blamed.

Tropes:

  • Everyone Has Standards: When Townsend is outed as both a murderer and a pedophile who raped a young Chinese girl and tried to frame her grandfather for Cooper's murder, even the officer who was seen joining him in making racist comments stares at him in disgust, while the head of Station 5 tells Brackenreid to "get this disgrace out of here."
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: The hostility the case attracts from the Station 5 constables shakes the sense of community Detective Murdoch felt he'd found in the constabulary, leaving him feeling he doesn't belong anywhere at the end of the episode.
  • One of Our Own: A constable from station five is murdered, but the case is assigned to Detective Murdoch from station four. The whole constabulary still consider themselves to be a family and things get pretty ugly when the evidence leads to someone from the police force.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Brackenreid outright states that the killer is "a monster" when it comes out that the same man who killed Officer Cooper raped a small child. In fact, Cooper was killed when he confronted Townsend for this crime. Once Townsend is exposed as a pedophile and tries to justify his crimes, even the officers who were shamelessly racist are openly disgusted with him.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: After Murdoch reveals that a constable was the culprit and the arrest is made, the Chief Inspector suggests he accept a reassignment to Winnipeg in the aftermath to make things easier for himself.
