Recap / Lost Tapes S 2 E 1 Vampire

Go To

The Redding family does its darnedest to make the best out of their new admittedly downtrodden home, but structural decay is the least of their problems. Their only son Eddie claims that monsters are trying to get him and said monsters have a taste for drinking people dry of their blood.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The episode ends with all the Reddings surviving their struggle with the vampires, but a repairman still ended up dead and the Reddings will probably be having nightmares for a long time due to the experience. Not to mention, only one of the creatures was shown being killed, with later reports of attacks to the north of the Redding dwelling implying the remaining beasts are still out there.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Eddie and Sarah being unable to budge the front door at the beginning of the episode is mildly amusing. Not so much during the climax when it remains stuck while they're fleeing from the vampires with one of the beasts dead on their tails, forcing them upstairs.
  • Never Found the Body: The body of the vampire that Dennis kills was never recovered.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: They are man-sized animalistic monstrosities that resemble a mixture of a bat and chimpanzee. They can function perfectly well in the daytime (though they're still presented as somewhat nocturnal) and attack in a group. No sparkles or longcoats here. They can be killed by staking them through the heart...no stakes/crosses are required; just a sharp piece of debris will suffice.
  • Papa Wolf: Dennis briefly holds his own against the vampire trying to come out of the basement while his wife and son flee to safety. He also gets past the monsters to regroup with his family and is seemingly able to kill one of the abominations via staking.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Eddie is afraid of his new home largely on principle of being a timid kid unhappy with the family’s move. He’s right to be afraid, but unbeknownst to him, it’s because there’s a pack of carnivorous man-sized monsters lurking in the house.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: There are at least three vampires in the house, as Eddie (in a panic) recounts just before one tries to break into his room, but only one is shown being stabbed to death before the danger passes. Given that the corpse of that creature is never recovered, it's possible that the remaining two decided that the prey wasn't worth any more losses and removed their fallen comrade's body. They have shown a surprising amount of intelligence despite their vicious features.
  • Wooden Stake: Played with; the piece of wood Dennis uses on the vampire isn't a stake, but it appears to get the job done. At the very least it drives the beast off, if not killing it via eventual blood loss.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Eddie is the one whom the creatures single out at first, as one sneaks into his bedroom in the middle of the night and almost gets him.
