Go To

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Call-Back: Laura comments on how she reads Emerson's works and mentions how she met the man himself, in Season 8's "A Wiser Heart".
  • Culture Clash: When Almanzo and John stay at a Japanese hotel, Hilarity Ensues.
  • Epic Fail: Almanzo and John Carter's trip to the Grange Convention. They can't find a hotel except at a Japanese one where they don't understand anything, they get robbed and framed by the robber, and forced to go back inside a train caboose, starving and imagining all the roastbeef the cattle inside could produce.
  • Hot for Preacher: Mr. Edwards thinks Laura and Sarah are having this for the Reverend Hale, and that he's taking advantage of that to seduce her, when in truth, he's just asking for their help to restore an old house to present Reverend Alden with.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Mr. Edwards starts getting suspicious upon seeing Sarah and Laura visit the young Minister's house so often, and after seeing him read love poetry for Laura and Sarah comment on his handsomeness (questioning why he wasn't married yet), gets convinced that he's been seducing both of them into having an affair with him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Mr. Edwards figures out what Reverend Hale's plans are about (giving Alden a new house as reward for his years of selfless dedication to the church), he's so ashamed of himself for having assaulted an innocent man he can't bring himself to attend the ceremony (it doesn't help Hale has to attend with a visible black eye), until Hale approaches him outside and assures him there are no hard feelings and all is forgiven.
