Recap / Little House On The Prairie S 9 E 8 Love

Go To

Mr. Edwards causes a stir when he starts to fall for a young woman stricken with blindness who could regain her sight with a risky new operation. The major age gap between the two upsets many onlookers, but the feelings in their hearts are pure and admirable on their own. Isaiah will have to choose between Jane's feelings for him or becoming the subject of scandal, and worries that Jane will think of him differently if and when she gets her sight back.

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: Isaiah is embroiled in a heated argument with Laura over whether or not he can realistically conceive a meaningful future with Jane. Isaiah argues that as long as they love each other, nothing else should matter, and tops that off with a dig at Laura, stating "What do you know about such things? You're just a kid!" Laura's response?
"I'm the same age as Jane."
  • Call-Back: Isaiah is put in the exact same situation that Dr. Baker endured all the way back in Season 1's "Doctor's Lady", where he meets and falls in love with someone too young to be properly considered a lover.
  • May-September Romance: Jane Canfield is in her very early 20s. Mr. Edwards' age is never given, but Word of God places his age (at this time) somewhere in his late 40s.
  • Noodle Incident: Jenny questions Jane about an incident where she and Laura put purple dye on Mrs. Oleson's bath water, and she never figured out it was them.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Jane Canfield is introduced as a long-time friend of Laura's who lived in Walnut Grove at the Blind School before it burnt down.
