Recap / Law & Order S5 E7 "Precious"

Go To

Marty Willick reports that his 3-month-old daughter Emily was snatched in a park. It soon becomes clear that his story isn't true. Eventually Marty confesses that he disposed of Emily's body, and the police recover it. Marty says that Emily was a crib death and he wanted to protect his wife Eileen. But the detectives discover that Emily is the Willicks' third child to die in a "crib death." Their doctor attributed the first two deaths to genetic causes, but then the Willicks had a foster child taken away because of suspicions they'd tried to smother him. Eileen clearly has psychological problems and says that no one "understands". The Willicks are arrested.

An expert witness concludes that Eileen suffers from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy - she harms her children in order to draw attention to herself. McCoy tries to appeal to Marty's instincts as a father, but he still denies that Eileen has done anything wrong. So McCoy decides that both parents should be charged with murder. Matters are further complicated by the fact that only Emily's death is on trial; McCoy isn't allowed to ask about the deaths of the other two children. The jury hangs, 9-3 in favor of conviction.

McCoy declares that he'll only offer a plea deal if Eileen agrees to be sterilized, but the judge says no and grants a motion for McCoy to be removed from the case. He notices that Eileen recently started seeing a new doctor, who happens to be an obstetrician. Sure enough, Eileen is expecting yet another baby. Marty, who didn't know about her pregnancy, is shocked. Confronted with the reality that she won't stop killing, he confesses that he walked in on her smothering Emily. Eileen goes to jail and Schiff says that, by the time she gets out, the baby should be grown up and able to defend themselves.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Attention Whore: Eileen is one because of her disorder. She even suggests that wanting attention was the main reason why she had children.
  • Broken Bird: Eileen Willick fits this trope.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Eileen killed three children, but each time, numerous doctors and authority figures didn't notice anything wrong.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Briscoe and Logan try this on Marty to try and get him to tell the truth about Emily.
  • It's All About Me: Eileen can only seem to talk about the loss of her children in terms of how it affected her.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Marty loves Eileen so much that when she killed three of their children, each time he covered for her rather than report it. Fortunately, he comes to understand that she won't stop until she gets help and does confess her crimes.
  • Münchausen Syndrome: Eileen suffers from a form of this disorder, which caused her to repeatedly take her children to hospital and eventually kill them.
  • Offing the Offspring: Eileen did this three times and almost killed a foster child as well.
  • Papa Wolf: Briscoe has a strong reaction to the case because of his feelings as a father. When he gets Marty to confess, it takes every bit of will he has to control his anger, especially when they find the baby's body.
  • Schiff One-Liner: His comment on Eileen's next kid being old enough to fight back by the time she is released from prison.
