Recap / Isekai Quartet S 2 E 1 Join The Fight Transfer Student

Go To

The door to Class 2 opens, revealing Naofumi Iwatani, who immediately closes the door again. The students ask if that was the new transfer student, but Roswaal states that he is not: their new classmate is a black cat called Chomusuke. Subaru is the first to raise concerns about the fact - namely that, if the cat is going to be a student, why isn't Puck (Emilia's familiar) a student as well? Viktoriya says that it is amazing they are having a cat as a classmate, but Tanya points out that, after an undead and a demon, a cat is normal. Aqua butts in by reminding them she's a goddess, but Tanya points out that her still claiming to be a goddess is irritating. Aqua tries to get Kazuma to tell the others she is a goddess, but Kazuma shoots her down by claiming to the others that Aqua is delusional.

Roswaal decides that, with the new student, they must change the class seatings. Subaru tells Ram that now she will not be able to slack off, since now she won't be hiding behind Cocytus, but Ram states that she does not care, since she would slack off even if she wasn't hiding. Rem cheers on her, much to Subaru's bemusement. Roswaal points out to Mare as another student hiding behind someone larger than her, and Mare claims that being where he is allows him to admire the back of Ainz's head. Albedo, Shalltear and Aura also declare their being honored at seeing a part of Ainz, while Demiurge states that his position allows him to both admire Ainz and pay attention in class. Roswaal then declares they are going to do the reseating, and everyone immediately guesses it's going to be by drawing. Once done, some of them are unhappy with the result, particularly Albedo (now sitting on the opposite corner from Ainz), who requests a redrawing that is immediately ignored by Roswaal.

Meanwhile, Naofumi is waiting on the school's main gate when Wilhelm von Astrea, the janitor, finds him. Wilhelm invites him to tea, and Naofumi explains how he arrived to the world: he, Raphtalia and Filo were fighting a monster when his shield transformed into a button, which the monster pushed. Wilhelm tells Naofumi that maybe there is a reason he has been brought to this world, and suggest he keep moving forward, saying that Naofumi reminds him of himself. Naofumi leaves just as Sebas Tian arrives to have lunch with Wilhelm.

The Class 2 students relax playing baseball. Weiss is the pitcher, Darkness is at the bat, and naturally she is unable to get even close to hitting the ball, much to her distress. At the third ball, she decides to jump in front of the ball, and the pain from the strike overwhelms even her. To her surprise, Cocytus rules strike, and she is out.

Aqua, Aura and Subaru have to deal with a conundrum: earlier, they had two pets, but now they have three. Aqua "solves" the problem by "killing" Death Knight, much to Hamsuke's distress and Subaru's shock. The new pet presents herself as Filo, and she asks if they have seen her Master, Naofumi. Death Knight is restored to unlife.

Meanwhile, Raphtalia walks through the school's corridors, seeking Naofumi. When she finds Ainz and Kazuma, she thinks the former is a monster and gets ready to fight him, but Ainz and Kasuma convince her that she is in no danger. Raphtalia asks them if they have seen Naofumi, and when prompted she describes him. Kazuma offers to help her find Naofumi, much to her joy.

The baseball game continues, this time Viktoriya as the pitcher and Mare at the bat - with his staff. While Mare gets two strikes, Ainz, Kazuma and Raphtalia find Aqua in the stairs, watching as Filo runs around with Aura and Subaru riding. When Filo sees Raphtalia, she transforms back to her humanoid form (much to Aura's joy, while Subaru falls to the ground) and rushes to glomp her. Ainz comments to Subaru that the two girls are related to Naofumi, Subaru suggests Naofumi may be the Class 1 transfer student.

Mare hits the ball on the third try, but in such a way that it flies straight at an unaware Raphtalia and Filo. Naofumi appears right on time to create two Air Strike Shields, giving him just enough time to jump between the ball and the girls and deflect it. Naofumi is glad to see Raphtalia and Filo are fine, and tells them that, even if they are in a strange place, at least they are together.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: After Roswaal mentions they were getting a transfer student, Naofumi opens the door, looks inside and closes it. The students ask if he was the transfer, but no, the transfer student is actually Chomusuke.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Naofumi appears right on time to save Raphtalia and Filo from being hit by Mare's wayward baseball.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Mare hits the ball just in the direction Raphtalia and Filo were.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: The characters - who were heroes and villains in their respective universes - pass the time playing baseball.
  • Insult Backfire: Subaru jokes that Naofumi was probably scared away by Ainz, only for Ainz, Kazuma and Tanya to mock him.
  • Loophole Abuse: Averted. When Darkness realizes she won't be able to hit the ball, she tries to get through by stopping the ball with her body and claiming it was a dead ball, but because the pitch was in the strike zone, Cocytus rules her out.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Naofumi misses seeing Raphtalia while she is talking with Ainz and Kazuma, as a tree is blocking his path.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Mare is able to destroy Naofumi's Air Shields with just a baseball.
  • Slasher Smile: Aqua when she gets the chance to "kill" Death Knight.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Turns out there is a limit to Darkness' pain threshold. Being hit by a Weiss-thrown baseball to the gut hits the spot.
