Doing the Mungo Shuffle

After he has begun to heal, Harry recounts Vernon's assault to Auror Shacklebolt, who promises to notify the relevant Child Protection authorities and have the Dursleys arrested. The Weasleys visit Harry and invite him to stay with them until his custody hearing, as well as offering to become his legal guardians; Harry is stunned, but excited to accept, although he insists on being able to financially contribute, both for his support and for improving their home's security.

Harry's healer informs him that a scan has showed an anomaly in his magic, with a second body of magical energy linked to him and being gradually integrated, which Harry assumes to be his old and young selves merging together. Healer Stanhope also privately informs Molly, as a prospective guardian, that Harry shows symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and that he may be difficult to handle, but she is resolute in not abandoning him.

Harry and Ginny are able to spend more time together, and relax; she reads to him while he's bed-bound, and he catches up on her letters. As happened previously, their interactions contribute to him sleeping soundly that night, without nightmares. Her brothers tease her about their friendship, but between them Harry and Ginny are up to the task of fending them off.

  • Celebrity Resemblance: Harry mentions that Shacklebolt looks like Samuel L. Jackson. Shacklebolt appreciates the comparison.
  • Fusion Dance: It turns out that Harry is gradually integrating the magic of his younger and older selves, though at this point they are still distinct enough to observe them both.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Healer Stanhope speculates that Harry may have been through something so horrible that he has repressed the memories of it.
Stanhope: Him getting better may or may not require that he remember. If he does, you will have a very powerful young wizard going through an intense emotional trauma.
