A Granger Interlude

Hermione's perspective on first year is shown, including her curiosity about what Harry is hiding, and her adjustment to having friends look out for her. Over summer, she continues her research into mind magic, and obtains a primer on learning Occlumency, which she shares with their friend circle.

Harry moves into The Burrow, and the Weasleys welcome him, although Ginny is still prone to blushing around him. Mr Weasley passes on news that the Dursleys have cut a deal with the Ministry, avoiding prosecution in exchange for not causing a major breach of the Statute of Secrecy. Harry is angry that they're avoiding justice, but chooses revenge served cold, scheduling an appointment with Gringotts so he can leverage his wealth against the Dursleys.

  • Best Served Cold: When Harry hears that the Dursleys are not going to be prosecuted for almost killing him, he freezes in place, "like a statue carved from ice," then after thinking it over, simply asks to make an appointment at Gringotts so he can set the ball rolling on a Humiliation Conga.
  • Deadman Switch: The Dursleys' solicitor, having experience with the Ministry, ensures that multiple third parties have copies of documents regarding the magical world, with instructions to mail them to various newspapers and magazines if the Ministry doesn't make a deal — thus preventing the Ministry from simply Obliviating the Dursleys, unless they want all the work involved in covering up a major breach of the Statute of Secrecy.
