Recap / Half Life 2 Sandtraps

Go To

"Stay on the rocks! Don't step on the sand, it makes the Antlions crazy!"
Sandy

After clearing out a zombie-infested tunnel and getting past a few more Combine checkpoints, Gordon finds himself at Lighthouse Point, a Resistance base situated next to a lighthouse. From here, Gordon is told he has to continue the rest of the way to Nova Prospekt on foot, but first he has to help fend off an incoming Combine attack. Several waves of Dropships and one Gunship later, a rebel medic escorts Gordon to a secret passage at the bottom, then heads off to contend with another wave of Combine attackers.

Making his way along the cliffside below the lighthouse, Gordon comes across two rebels — one of them, named Laszlo, lays wounded on the sand, while his friend is crouched on some rocks nearby. The latter warns Gordon that stepping on the sand drives the Antlions crazy; as if on cue, a swarm of them emerges from the sand and kills Laszlo, who the other rebel takes to mourning as soon as the swarm is defeated. He tells Gordon that they were headed to a nearby Vortigaunt camp to get "Bugbait" so that the Antlions would leave them alone, but finds no use in it now that his buddy is dead.

And so Gordon heads for this Vortigaunt camp himself, being careful not to disturb the sand along the way. He eventually is forced to jump into a pit of sand right outside the camp, and in this pit he finds himself locked in a fight against an Antlion Guard.

Upon dispatching the giant Antlion, a Vortigaunt emerges from the nearby camp and extracts some pheropods — the sought-after Bugbait — from its corpse. Gordon picks them up, and the Vort leads him into the camp and to a training ground where he learns how to use his new weapon to herd Antlions. Once properly acquainted with the Bugbait, he's sent on his way to the final leg of the trip to Nova Prospekt with a swarm of Antlions at his beck and call. Making his way along one last stretch of coast and disabling the Thumpers along the way so his new allies can get through, Gordon soon finds himself in the drainage canals underneath the Combine prison.

This chapter contains examples of:

  • All There in the Manual: Laszlo's friend, Sandy, is only named through internal files and external sources like the Half-Life 2 Prima Guide.
  • The Beastmaster: Gordon becomes one for the Antlions after being obtaining some Bugbait, which helps him during his charge towards Nova Prospekt.
  • Call-Back: The cliffside area which you need to climb to get inside Nova Prospekt bears a resemblance to the cliffs in the Half-Life chapter "Surface Tension", especially with the set of pipes running down from the prison to the water below. There's even a final enemy that pops out from the pipe at the end of the level; in Half-Life it was a Headcrab, while here it's a Fast Zombie.
  • Justified Tutorial: The Vortigaunt that provides Gordon some Bugbait uses a specially designated area of the camp to show him how to use it.
  • Lighthouse Point: At one point Gordon visits a lighthouse called Lighthouse Point and has to fight off a gunship with the rocket launcher ammo stored inside.
