Recap / Goosebumps (1995) S2E17 "Vampire Breath"

Go To

Based on Vampire Breath, book #49 of the original Goosebumps series.

Freddy and Cara discover a strange door in their basement, and a vampire sleeping behind it.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Distillation: No time travel takes place, and instead of having a castle, Count Nightwing has an underground lair beneath the Martinezes' house.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Cara and Freddy's birthday is in this episode. They spend most of it fending off a hungry vampire, only to learn he was their grandfather and had forgotten due to the Vampire Breath containing his memories.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Count Nightwing is perfectly willing to drain kids of their blood. He becomes horrified on learning that Cara and Freddy are his grandchildren, and he nearly killed his family.
  • Forced Transformation: Gwendolyn gets turned into a cockroach in this version after Nightwing regains his powers.
  • Meaningful Name: Freddy and Cara's last name is Renfield, the same as Dracula's servant. It's a subtle hint to their true nature.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Besides the need for Vampire Breath, some of them (specifically Freddy and Cara after getting their new coffins) go to sleep at night. However Gwendolyn claims the vampires she lives with sleep during the day like traditional vampires.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Freddy Martinez and Cara are just best friends who are said to look like siblings in the book. In the episode, they actually are siblings.
  • Ship Sinking: The Freddy/Cara ship is sunk due to them being brother and sister in the episode. Though shipping the book versions is still alright.
  • The Starscream: Gwendolyn in this version when she gets her hands on the Vampire's Breath. Stating to Nightwing once she absorbs it completely it'll make her more powerful than him.
