Recap / Goosebumps (1995) S1E18/E19 "The Werewolf of Fever Swamp"

Go To

Based on The Werewolf of Fever Swamp, book #14 of the original Goosebumps series.

Grady Tucker and his family have moved to Florida, near a swamp inhabited by a werewolf.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Adapted Out: Cassie is removed from the story and her exposition about werewolves is given to Will.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Wolf's name is changed to Vandal.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Will is made out to be sympathetic, to the point where Grady says "Poor Will" when he dies.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Although the swamp hermit turns out to be Good All Along, his initial creepy behavior towards Grady, like trapping him in a net and carrying him back to his hut, then howling at the full moon raises a few questions about his sudden Heroic Sacrifice to save Grady. He might have originally intended to use him as bait for the werewolf, but even that's completely up in the air. It's also possible that he initially thought Grady was the werewolf. There would have been no way to rule out this possibility until the full moon came out.
  • Death by Adaptation: While the swamp hermit lives in the book, in the episode he dies at the hands of Will, making a Heroic Sacrifice to save Grady. Also, in the book, the werewolf is simply driven away. In the episode, it is knocked into quicksand and drowns.

The Werewolf Nightmare Is Over

When the werewolf falls into the swamp, it ends up drowning and Grady assumes the nightmare is finally over. At least that's what he thinks.
