Recap / Golgo 13 Ep 13 Cross Angle

Go To

Victor Lance is a paparazzo of considerable skill, one whose photos have shaken the world of the rich and elite. However, he has considered retirement, citing a lack of any challenge worthy of his skill...that is, until his boss floats an idea for one final job, one that would make Lance a legend among photographers: capture a shot of the infamous sniper and assassin, Golgo 13, at the exact moment he takes a life. Lance sees this as the ultimate test of his abilities as a photographer, likening his craft to Golgo's: it all comes down to taking the perfect shot from the best position at the exact right moment. Unlike his other jobs, however, Lance would be staking his life on this shot, as any who attempted to expose Golgo in the past would turn up dead.

Using his connections in the government, Lance learns who Golgo was hired to assassinate, where, and when. He sets out to find the best spot from which to capture his shot, using his instincts as a photographer to anticipate Golgo's plan. When the target makes his appearance, however, Golgo is nowhere to be found. When Lance's attention is sidetracked while trying to call his contact, the target is killed. Lance realizes shortly afterwards that Golgo's sniping position was a moving boat from a greater distance than the spot he anticipated.

Undeterred, Lance decides to take another shot at capturing a photo of Golgo in the act. This time, he learns that Golgo was hired to assassinate an arms dealer in London. The target would be returning to his hideout on Belwick Road by noon two days from the present. With this information, Lance deduces where the hideout would be, and from there, the two ideal places from which Golgo would fire: a nearby hotel, and the emergency staircase of the Adelu House. On the day of the planned assassination, Lance calls in a bomb threat to the hotel, forcing Golgo to take aim from the Adelu House position. On the emergency stairwell, Golgo takes aim, as Lance hones his camera on him. At that very moment, however, the sun peaking from behind cloud cover creates a glare on Lance's camera lens. In the span of a moment, Golgo loads a second bullet and fires twice: first at Lance's camera, then at his target, completing his contract.

Lance is completely shocked at his failure, but comes to see how Golgo has managed to avoid being exposed for so long. Reasoning that Golgo is a monster, Lance concedes defeat. As he takes his leave, he also realizes his target would be exposed when he opened his curtains to read the news on an electronic billboard. Immediately afterwards, he sees Golgo nearby, staring daggers at him. Lance's blood runs cold as he realizes just how frightening Golgo is, moments before a gunshot rings out...
