Recap / Full House S 5 E 18 The Devil Made Me Do It

Go To

"The Devil Made Me Do It" is an episode in the fifth season of Full House.

For mishandling Jesse's musical equipment, Michelle gets grounded after Jesse informs Danny of her bad behavior. Michelle then runs away to stay with Teddy out of spite, culminating in Jesse and Danny heading to Teddy's residence to teach Michelle a lesson. In the meanwhile, D.J. is getting tired of Stephanie and Kimmy repeatedly bickering with each other and resorts to making the two of them stay in her bedroom until they become friends.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Enemy Mine: Played for Laughs. D.J.'s tactic in getting Stephanie and Kimmy to become friends with each other backfires on her due to Stephanie and Kimmy, who have been arguing against each other, bonding over their mutual dislike of D.J.'s flaws that they've recognized and had to endure.
  • Go to Your Room!: Two examples, with one example being less comedic than the other.
    • Played for Drama when Danny's punishment to Michelle's bad behavior involves making her stay in her bedroom ("and no TV", adds Danny), which Michelle escalates by running away to live with Teddy.
    • Played for comedy and plot progression alike when D.J.'s method in getting Stephanie and Kimmy to be more friendly towards each other involves making them stay in her bedroom. Stephanie reacts by calling for pizza, arguing that it could take a while.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Played for Laughs. D.J.'s tactic in getting Stephanie and Kimmy to be more friendly with each other is by confining them inside her bedroom until they say nicer words to each other. It works as D.J. intended, but Stephanie and Kimmy end up bonding with each other over their mutual dislike of D.J.'s flaws that they've recognized and had to endure, resulting in them going for yogurt without D.J. The scene ends with D.J. quickly running after them to avoid being left behind.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: Michelle's consciences, one good and the other bad, try to talk her into making the decision each of them prefers. The Angel and the Devil in this case manifest as life-sized people on either side of her, with the Angel looking like a Disney princess while the Devil dressed like a biker.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Danny has misgivings about Joey biking with Wendy due to her much more active lifestyle compared to Joey's. Joey claims he doesn't need to fake athleticism to impress someone else... only to start doing pushups (and lying about the number of times he's doing them, too) upon hearing Wendy's arrival.
    • D.J. complains to Stephanie and Kimmy about their tendency to argue, and they respond that it's not true... right before they argue about exactly where they were when their most recent argument started. This causes D.J. to make them stay in her room in an attempt to get them to be more friendly with each other.
  • Insult Backfire: This exchange between Michelle and her bad conscience.
Michelle: You got a bad attitude.
    Bad Michelle: Thanks.
  • Minor Major Character: Joey appears only at the beginning of the episode, in which he meets Wendy (Danny's sister) to go biking together, after which he's entirely absent for the rest of the episode.
  • The Runaway: The attention-seeking variant. Michelle runs away to stay with Teddy in retaliation for Danny punishing her via telling her to stay in her room (and no TV for added effect) for her bad behavior early in the episode.
