Eddie finally goes to Taiwan as part of a student exchange program, but quickly ends up separated from his group and reliant on a stranger to help him survive. Back home, the rest of the family try to get Jessica to admit that she misses Eddie.
- Big Damn Heroes: Played with, in that a bunch of Taiwanese thugs try to mug Eddie, and a nearby English-speaking noodle chef steps in to intervene...but he is simply thrown to the side, followed by the thugs retreating on their own when they realize how big Eddie is (compared to native citizens) and mistake him for a basketball player. However, following this, the chef still gets to be heroic by allowing Eddie to safely stay in his home and use his phone to get back in touch with the exchange group (though he gets upset when Eddie's first call is long-distance to his parents).
- Dramatic Irony: The main reason Jessica can't admit that she misses Eddie is because she thinks he doesn't care enough to call home while in Taiwan, unaware that Eddie's been separated from his group and is desperately trying to survive.
- Embarrassing Tattoo: Grandma Jenny admits that she has a few, all of which depict actors from Cheers and were gotten after the series ended, in order to relate to Jessica dealing with separation from Eddie.
- Language Barrier: One of the major issues Eddie has when separated from the group is that he doesn't know enough Mandarin to ask anyone for assistance. Luckily, he's eventually saved by a noodle chef that can speak English due to trying (and failing) to find success in America.
- Tsundere: Jessica acts like one when she denies missing Eddie, causing her family harm when they try to get her to open up, and having a burst of emotion when Eddie finally calls only to deny it seconds later.
- When I Was Your Age...: Eddie states that he used to be told these kind of stories by his parents, and only realizes how true they were when he meets a noodle chef that tried and failed to start his own restaurant in America.
