Louis makes it his mission to fix Jessica's relationship with her father. Evan decides to make Eddie the executor of his will because of Emery's year of bad luck, leading Emery and Eddie to fight over who is the better older brother.
- Bait-and-Switch: After Louis admits his Psychological Projection, Jessica tells him that there's always someone that will lend an ear to his problems. Cut to Louis on the phone with Jessica's psychic, Madame Xing.
- Doing In the Wizard: When Emery and Eddie make amends, Eddie states that Emery's probably not actually been cursed with a year of bad luck based on his Eastern Zodiac sign, but is just struggling with puberty.
- Gossip Evolution: Evan originally just asked one of the women in the local HOA to officiate his will, which leads to a chain of literal telephone gossip and everyone in the HOA assuming he's dying. At one point, they even gossip about Evan's impending death to Evan before realizing their mistake and hanging up their phones.
- Mistaken for Dying: When the other housewives in the area learn that Evan's already created a will, they assume he's dying instead of just planning ahead.
- Must Make Amends: After Evan is Mistaken for Dying, all of the other housewives start sending tuna casseroles to the Huang residence in order to patch up any grievances before Evan's passing, which is what inspires Louis to lie to his wife that her father is dying in the hopes that they'll amend their supposedly-distant relationship. In the end, Evan ends up announcing his good health to a visiting housewife just because he's sick of tuna.
- Plot-Triggering Death: The episode is kicked off with Louis and Jessica attending the funeral of a relative on Jessica's side of the family, which leads to Louis learning about Jessica and her father's lack of closeness. Louis and Jessica then spend the rest of their plotline attending other funerals and one wedding that Jessica's father is also attending.
- Psychological Projection: It turns out that Jessica and her father are both actually perfectly fine with the distance between them. When the relationship between them doesn't change even when Louis lies to Jessica that her father is dying, he has a breakdown and admits all the things he regrets not telling his own father before he passed, explaining why he tried so hard to make Jessica and her father open up to each other.
- What You Are in the Dark: Emery is initially upset that Eddie was picked as Evan's will's executor, and argues that he's only a stand-in until Emery's bad luck passes and that he isn't reliable enough to handle the responsibility. However, while talking about the problem with Grandma, Grandma shows Emery some of the I.O.U.s the boys have asked for in the past, including a couple from Eddie so he could pay for things Emery has lost or broken during his bad luck year without him knowing; learning that his older brother's secretly been looking out for him humbles Emery.
