Recap / Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends S4E6 "I Only Have Surprise for You"

Go To

Mac tries everything that he possibly can to prevent Bloo and the gang from throwing him a surprise party.

Provides examples of:

  • Foreshadowing:
    • The episode begins with Bloo laughing, and Mac pieces together that he's planning a humiliating party for him. Bloo keeps insisting that it's the curtains that he finds funny, but... what exactly is funny about curtains?
    • When Mac points out that Bloo could have told him that the party was meant for "Artie" and not for him, Bloo only retorts that he could have made that an itsy bit clearer. We later find out why he didn't tell Mac...
  • Jerkass Ball: Even the nicer residents of Foster's such as Wilt, Coco, Madame Foster, Eduardo, Frankie, and Goo got in on Bloo's mean-spirited prank. It's Downplayed with Eduardo though as he was only doing what the invitations told him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Subverted. While The Fosters residents and Goo shaming Mac for ruining "Artie's" party comes off as rude yet understandable at first given that Mac had wrecked the party out of paranoia, the reveal that it was all a big plan to humiliate Mac shows that it was just a way to guilt trip Mac into humiliating himself again.
  • Hate Sink: If you didn't want to smack Bloo in the face before this episode, you'll definitely want to after viewing this episode.
  • This Means Warpaint: Mac dons warpaint on his face when he tries to sabotage his own surprise birthday party.
  • The Stinger: Madame Foster tries to explain to Eduardo and the clown's imaginary friend that Artie isn't real, but when they see her Artie costume, they reach the incorrect conclusion that Artie is dead, resulting in Eduardo running away screaming and the clown going on a tirade about how sick and deranged he perceives Foster's to be.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: Mac tries to avoid getting ridiculed and embarrassed through another surprise party by Bloo (even when Mac tells him to stop), after suspecting that Bloo and everyone in Foster's are throwing one for him, by sabotaging and destroying a birthday party in a library with his Rambo-like outfit, only to be told by the house residents that it was for a "4-year old imaginary child" named "Artie" "created by Goo" and made "Artie" running away crying. This makes everyone mad at Mac and hate him for ruining "Artie's birthday" before they angrily leave Mac saddened and guilty and Mac must make this up to them and "Artie". So with Bloo's assistance, Mac cleaned up and re-did the party and under Bloo's demands, humiliates himself by reluctantly dressing up and acting like a clown in front of everyone to cheer "Artie" up... only to be revealed that "Artie" was Madame Foster in disguise, the party was for Mac, and that the whole house (except Eduardo as he was just told to come in through via an invitation and One-eyed Cy due to his interest in interior design) took the jerkass level as they all tricked and lied to Mac and took advantage of him for no reason as a rule set up by Bloo to make Mac miserable and ridicule himself. So Mac is left to suffer deliberate humiliation at yet another surprise party that doesn't even celebrate his birthday, while the episode ends with Bloo gloating to him that he'll always be one step ahead of him.
