Tropes
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: Despite his outwardly fussy and innocuous demeanor, Leland catches Sheryl right away with his philosophizing about how kindness is hypocrisy and his willingness to openly joke about harm coming to others. This is enough for her to ditch her stuffy, hiccup-plagued nice guy date.
- Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Leland's efforts to seduce Sheryl away from her bad date (a man with a case of hiccups so awful he can barely carry on a conversation for longer than ten seconds) begins with him telling her with a smile about a man who died of a heart attack after a terrible case of hiccups, capping it off with the fact that he was actively suicidal so he technically would've gotten what he wanted anyway. He later quips that his own date must have stood him up, despite the fact that by his own admission she was in a car accident on her way there.
- The Faceless: The audience never sees what "Brenda" actually looks like under her mask, although it seems to frighten people on the street and Kristen's daughters once she takes it off.
- Goofy Print Underwear: While playing a strip card game over the phone with him Sheryl accuses Leland of having these, specifically ones with Cupid hearts all over them. He denies it, and claims that his boxers have Jedi knights on them instead.
- Halloween Episode: The events take place on Halloween, the episode is named for Halloween's calendar date and it originally aired on Halloween night.
- Malevolent Masked Man: The fake Brenda is a child version, leading Kristen's daughter's to a cemetery for a live burial.
- Shout-Out: David and Kristen's arrival at the house recreates a similar shot of Father Karras in The Exorcist.
