Tropes found in this episode

  • Armor-Piercing Response: Julius gives one to Rochelle when he tells her the reason why he had a credit card and hid it all these years.
Julius: I can explain. 15 years ago, I was flat broke and needed money.
Narrator: That’s no different than 15 seconds ago!
    Rochelle: Mmm-hmm…
Julius: The department store was giving those things away!
Rochelle: Really? Did they give you tips on where to hide it?
Julius: I bought one thing, and it took 7 years to pay off.
Rochelle: Well, what about the other 8 years, Julius?
Julius: Every time I tried to cancel the card, they just sent me a new one and raised the limit!
Rochelle: Okay, Mister "A+ on your FICA score"… what did you buy that was so important that I had to wait 15 years to find out about?!
    Julius: …Your wedding ring.
Narrator: For the first time in 15 years, my father got my mother to shut up.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In an Imagine Spot, Chris ponders what could happen if he decided to go through with snatching a chain. Cue the FBI finding out and arresting him, getting the death penalty, and meeting his demise via electric chair. The real kicker comes from the fact that almost everybody in the dream sequence is wearing, what else, a gold chain.
  • Here We Go Again!: After spending the episode dealing with Malvo and trying to produce a replacement gold chain, Chris now has to deal with a carjacker after he stops him from stealing Vanessa's car!
  • I Have This Friend: Chris goes to Julius for help concerning what to do about Malvo, except he uses Greg as a stand-in for himself. When Julius asks why he didn't just ask his own father for help, he claims that "he didn't know what he was gonna do". Julius instantly figures out that Chris is lying out of fear, and takes matters into his own hands. In his words, "white kids don't snatch chains".
  • Papa Wolf: A particularly badass, cathartic, heartwarming version. Julius is able to pick up on the fact that Chris is in trouble, and personally confronts Malvo about it, right as he puts his hands on his son.
  • Villain Has a Point: An example bordering on Insane Troll Logic, obviously Played for Laughs. When Chris tries bargaining with Malvo for something of equal value to a gold chain, the latter points out..
Malvo: ...Nobody needs a chain! So I'm actually doing these people a favor by taking things that they don't. Need.
