Neurotic researcher Carl finds himself fired, leaving Carter to talk him out of a suicide attempt. But when an accident imbues Carl with extraordinary powers, his personality changes as well. What is the price of immortality?

Tropes

  • Ambiguous Situation: Was inflicting a mortal wound on Carter truly an accident, or did Carl do it on purpose, knowing it was the easiest way to get near to the Artefact again?
  • Big Damn Kiss: Carl plants one on Beverly, to the collective shock of everyone in Café Diem.
  • Driven to Suicide: Carl tries to jump off a bridge after being fired, as his job is all he has due to his OCD and he has nowhere else to go.
  • Healing Factor: Carl gets one after being exposed to the Artefact. Despite falling fifty feet and having Carter land on him, he gets up without a scratch. Later, he uses the Artefact to heal a wound he accidentally gave Carter.
  • Living Crashpad: Mixed with a healthy dose of Good Thing You Can Heal.
Carter: A hypothetical guy falls maybe fifty feet, lands flat on the ground, and then another guy weighing 180 falls, and lands on top of him. Okay, what is the chance of the hypothetical guy getting up and walking away? [...]
Henry: Look, this hypothetical guy: is that you?
Carter: No. I landed on the hypothetical guy, though.
  • Mind over Matter: Also telekinetic powers.
  • Not Himself: After getting powers, Carl completely changes his personality due to his Healing Factor giving him no reason to be Terrified of Germs anymore.
  • Telepathy: Carl is able to read other people's minds.
  • Terrified of Germs: Carl Carlson, so much so that he rarely leaves his house. He even wipes down the bridge railing when he's planning to throw himself off.
    Carl: Vincent! A beer.
Vincent: Okay. But you don't drink alcohol and I don't serve you anymore since you brought in the health inspector.
Carl: There was a fly in my soup.
Vincent: You sensed a fly in your soup.
    Carl: I may have overreacted.
  • Talking Down the Suicidal: Carter convinces Carl not to jump from a bridge. It's as Carl is climbing back over that he slips, pulling Carter down after him.
