Go To

Original air date: 8/14/2000

After reading a story called "The Legend of the Big Red Chicken", Dora and Boots go on an adventure to the Big Red Hill to see if the chicken from the story is real.

Tropes:

  • Does Not Speak Common: Señor Tucán, who only speaks Spanish, is introduced. In his first scene, he does not understand Boots when he asks him to fix the bridge, so Dora, who speaks English and Spanish, translates for him and advises the viewer to help Señor Tucán by deciding what part fits in the bridge in Spanish.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Being the first episode, there are several "beta" elements not present for the rest of the series.
    • It starts with Dora asking the viewer their name and how old.
    • When Backpack's segment begins, it cuts right to her; beginning mid-season, there is a flash of light which fades to the segment.
    • At the end of the Backpack segment, all the items go back into Backpack; it's not until "Beaches" does the chosen item stay out while the other items go back in.
    • The chosen item flies out of Backpack for Dora or Boots to catch; beginning with the next episode, the chosen item falls out of the sky.
    • In this episode, as he's approaching Dora and Boots for the first time, Swiper immediately stops and stays where he is when Dora and Boots start chanting "Swiper, no swiping!" at him. In later episodes, he keeps approaching them and only stops once they've finished the three-time chant.
    • Speaking of which, after Swiper is stopped, he exits by lunging away in a fox-like position. The earlier episodes afterwards would continue to show him running away on all fours like a real fox until the series later switched to him running like a human would.
    • Map's map is farther away from the camera than normal, and styled differently.
    • The Travel Song is sung twice on the way to the first location, occurring again after encountering Swiper.
    • When the Travel Song begins, Dora does not say "Come on, say it with us!"
    • The second and third times during the three picture sequence, all three pictures appear at once instead of one by one.
    • At the end of a "stand up" activity, Dora says, "You can sit down, now."
    • The "favorite parts" epilogue is accompanied by an instrumental of the theme song which keeps playing into the Character finds in the Closing Credits; beginning with "Hic-Boom-Ohhh", an instrumental cue is used.
  • Make a Wish: In the story, the Little Red Chicken makes a wish on the stars in the sky that he would be big. His wish was granted, and he becomes the Big Red Chicken.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After failing to swipe Dora and Boots' bananas earlier in the episode, Swiper shows up again when the two arrive at the gate and successfully swipes the key from them.
