Recap / Diagnosis: Murder S1E5 "The Thirteen Million Dollar Man"

Go To

Dale Harlan, one of Dr. Sloan's friends, walks into Community General Hospital with a bullet wound in his chest. The team is unable to save him, but before he passes, Dale gives Mark a lottery ticket, something only three other people even knew he had.

The ticket is a $13 million dollar winner, and as Mark is swarmed by people who want that money, Mark sets out to determine if it was Dale's high society wife, a mysterious doctor, or a shady club owner who did Dale in. All of them have a motive... 13 million of them, really.

"The Thirteen Million Dollar Man" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • The Alibi: Monica and Larry turn out to have been having sex at a motel when Dale was killed.
  • Batman Gambit: Mark has Monica come at Alex with a gun and chase him into his office to see if Alex had a secret passageway he could use to leave his office unseen. Monica goes a bit off-script by using real bullets in her gun instead of blanks, but the trap works nonetheless.
  • Blunt "Yes": When Norman discovers the pig in Mark's office.
    Norman: Is that a pig?
Mark: Yes, Norman. Yes it is.
  • Clear Their Name: In addition to solving Dale's murder, Mark has to help Jimmy Stevens, an old friend of Jack's who stole Dale's wallet and the gun that killed him from the crime scene, later holding up a convenience store with it.
  • The Determinator: Dale Harlan walked a whole mile to Community General despite having been shot in the chest.
  • Fake Alibi: Alex claims he was in his office and never left. He of course is lying, and had a secret passageway.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: Based on The Six Million Dollar Man.
  • Secret Path: Jack theorizes that Alex Ridlin has one of these in his office, which would have allowed him to shoot Dale without being seen leaving his office by his two goons. He in fact does, the switch hidden in a desk drawer.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Whatever Happened to the Mouse?: We never learn what Mark did with that pig he got.
