Recap / Diagnosis: Murder S1E1 "Miracle Cure"

Go To

In Los Angeles, there is a preacher by the name of Father Morrissey. He appears to be an upstanding man, up until someone walks into a confessional with him. The man knows a dark secret about the reverend, so he takes it upon himself to smite this man.

"Miracle Cure" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • Bluffing the Murderer: Mark ultimately proves Morrissey's guilt when he has Alice come to the church and talk to Morrissey, seemingly remembering him killing Mitch. He takes Alice to the roof, ready to throw her off it, where Steve and other cops are waiting to arrest him.
  • Book Safe: Father Morrissey keeps a pistol in a book of scripture, which he takes out before the opening credits start. He doesn't actually use that gun for anything, but hey, you might as well go all the way with the Sinister Minister thing, right?
  • Car Fu: Morrissey first tries to kill Mitch by running him down in a car stolen from one of his parishioners. It doesn't kill him, so he has to finish Mitch off in the hospital by giving him an embolism.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Mark is introduced riding in an ambulance with his medical students. As they are being flung around, he is calm and jovial. As the paramedics revive Alice, he acts sweetly towards her. This shows Mark to be a kind and knowledgeable soul.
  • Fiery Cover Up: Morrissey plants a bomb in Mitch's house and causes the stove to leak gas to cover up any traces that he was there. Amanda and Jack are almost fried by the whole thing.
  • Reverse Whodunnit: After A Twist of the Knife, this is the first episode of the series proper to utilize this format.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Alice, the homeless woman Mark treats through the episode.
  • Sinister Minister: Father Morrissey.
