Recap / DEATH BATTLE! S08E14 - Korra VS Storm

Go To

Wiz: Avatar Korra, master of all four elements.
Boomstick: Storm, the X-Men's goddess of the... storms... weather.
Wiz: The building blocks of our natural world are nothing if not tempestuous and unpredictable.
Boomstick: Which means you gotta be some kinda badass to control them.

With Season 8 reaching its end, the hosts pit these goddesses among men, able to bend the elements to their whim and bring forth the unyielding fury of nature itself. Only a chosen few from their worlds can hope to rival their power, but when left unchecking, whose elemental mastery will reign supreme in a death battle?

Tahno: Come on, little girl. Give me your best shot (He gets hit under the chin by Korra's stream of water, collapsing out of the ring as the bell rings.)
Korra: Hmph. Chump.

Storm: Testing me, hmm? It's time you remembered why they call me Storm!

*Work in progress*

The Avatar lineage has met its end at the hands of a more than worthy combatant, and the hosts begin to break down how Marvel's weather witch claimed victory. Korra proved to be one of the greatest benders in the Avatar universe, and was more than capable of handling the best of the best. However, as befitting her origins, Storm was just on a level of power she could not simply compare to. For starters, Ororo's massively hypersonic flight speeds and ability to detect all forms of weather meant that she could safely battle from a distance. Even if Korra were to close in the gap somehow and utilize her martial arts skills, Storm has had more than enough experience dealing with expert-level martial artists in the Marvel universe to prepare herself. Korra is ruled to be fast enough to dodge lightning bolts, but Storm has dodged beams of light; even disregarding that, Storm's own flight speeds being fast enough to enter orbit within seconds already makes her potentially 20 times faster than Korra.

Elements like fire and earth that Storm had no immediate access to could theoretically allow Korra to exploit Storm's claustrophobia, but given that Storm's own lightning could scale to mutants capable of punching all the way down to the Earth's core, the X-Man would be able to ensure she would not stay trapped for long. Not only that, but the planetary-level storms and star-level feats Ororo could output put her already as being nearly 250 times stronger than anything the water bender could match. Even taking the fight to the spirit world would prove to be for naught, as Storm's abilities have worked in alternate dimensions and alien planets. Also, as Storm's mutant abilities are genetic in nature as opposed to spiritual, Korra cannot utilize energy bending to de-power her opponent. To hammer the point down, Storm is in possession of multiple ways she could've ended the fight in an instant that Korra had simply no chance of countering, like taking the air out of her lungs or lobotomization via frying her brain with lightning strikes. Overall, in this battle between two masters of the elements, Storm was simply too fast, strong and experienced for the young Avatar to stand a chance against.

Boomstick: Don't get bend-t out of shape. Korra just couldn't weather the Storm.
Wiz: The winner is Storm.

Next Time on Death Battle...

Korra VS Storm contains examples of:

  • Always Someone Better: While Korra does have some superiority over Storm by controlling fire and earth, elements she does not have access to, Storm's powers vastly trump Korra's by virtue of commanding every aspect of weather, be it on Earth, in another dimension or even another planet entirely.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Korra ends up dying to this, from a lightning-based finger gun from Storm that blows a huge hole in the back of her head.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: Storm is the first Marvel character to defeat an opponent not from DC Comics since War Machine's outing with Genos back in Season 7.
    • Storm is also the first X-Men character to win since Deadpool's victory over Deathstroke all the way back in Season 2, nearly 7 years ago.
  • The Cameo: Once again, the Cabbage Merchant from The Last Airbender appears and has his wares destroyed per usual, this time both his wares and himself get sucked in by Storm's winds. Deceased characters from Death Battle also appear, albeit as shadowy figures and silhouettes when Storm gets knocked into the spirit realm.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: This episode was so one-sided in Storm's favor that even the fight animation made no attempt to hide it, with Storm either dodging, countering, or brushing off most of Korra's attacks before blasting a hole in her head with no effort. It also doesn't help that while Korra's capable of dishing out and surviving some serious punishment, Storm's dealt with far worse. One of the biggest differences is that Storm's powers come directly from her own biology as a mutant whereas benders derive their powers from spiritual sources.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Done by both sides. Korra uses the lightning Storm conjures to try and stun her long enough to use her energybending on her (not that it would have worked, but points for trying), only for Storm to do the same, only instead of stunning Korra, she goes for a killing blow in the form of a finger gun.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: At the beginning of the end analysis, the hosts point out that being the Avatar makes Korra superior to pretty much every other Bender in the world due to being able to manipulate all four elements. The rest of the analysis then shows that against someone who can also manipulate multiple facets of the world, not to mention more precisely and with more power, the advantages bequeathed to the holder of the Avatar title ultimately fall short.
  • Worthy Opponent: Storm considers Korra as this, commenting on her power both before and after the fight.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Storm's weather manipulation isn't spiritual in any way, shape, or form and comes from a different source altogether - that being her mutant genes. As such, Korra cannot take away Storm's powers since her energybending only works on fellow benders.

Korra's last moments

Korra manages to bend the lightning Storm summoned in the attempt to stun the mutant but the mutant then takes back her lightning and send it back to her opponent by her brain, killing her.
