Recap / Daria S 4 E 07

Go To

Daria finds herself attending an awkward business trip with Jake while Helen finds herself stuck at home with Quinn and the Fashion Club for an even more awkward sleepover.

Tropes:

  • The Ahnold: Barlow’s Austrian assistant, Arno, is clearly a parody of Arnold Schwarzenegger, right down to the gap in his front teeth.
  • A Fate Worse Than Death: Daria decides going with Jake on his business trip is preferable to being stuck at home with Quinn and the Fashion Club's boy band obsession.
  • Loophole Abuse: Helen allowed Daria and Quinn to invite a friend each for a sleepover while Jake and her go out of town. Quinn invites Stacy, but then invites Sandi and Tiffany to not make them feel excluded. After Daria has to go with Jake in Helen's place, Helen ends up staying at home and questions Quinn about the extra two invitations. Quinn quickly excuses herself claiming that they're filling Daria and Jane's spots.
Jane: I sense a worrisome teen conspiracy afoot.
Daria: No, Quinn's just obeying orders by inviting one person to sleep over this weekend. Three times.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After an entire night of cattiness between the girls, they all end up with terrible looks (Sandi and Quinn because of sleep deprivation, Stacy wakes up with bed hair, and Tiffany gets an allergic reaction to the facemask). To top it all, Joey, Jeffy, and Jamie pay them a visit and see them in their morning looks without any makeup on.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Quinn and Sandi have similar nightmares where Sandi mutilates Quinn's hair in her sleep, and vice versa.
  • Not a Morning Person: Sandi gives her fashion clubmates fair warning, but luckily for her they all wake up looking goblinoid.
  • Parents as People: Jake's inner thoughts reveal he's genuinely terrified of hurting or neglecting Daria the same way his father hurt him, and wishes to simply tell his daughter he's there for her if she needs him. Unfortunately, Jake just doesn't know how to say it out loud and is openly disappointed with himself over his lack of parenting skills.
  • Troll: Sandi convinces Helen to stick around for a makeover and puts herself on a First-Name Basis, mostly to make Quinn squirm.
