Tropes in this episode

  • Brother–Sister Incest: Subverted by the UnSub, who refused to have sex with a girl because he secretly knew she was his half-sister. He still dated her, though.
  • Call-Back: The subplot is partially about Haley's death
  • Dysfunctional Family: Apparently, none of the kids in the victim family liked their father very much. The surviving son goes so far as to say he hated his father. Also, the father had an affair that lasted for 25 years.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: Hotch's father-in-law blames him for Haley's death.
  • Rejected Apology: Hotch's father-in-law admits that he simply cannot forgive Hotch for what happened with his daughter, and is simply waiting for his Alzheimers to let him forget.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Hotch's father-in-law is diagnosed with Alzheimers.
  • Self-Made Orphan: The UnSub kills his own father. He is arrested while preparing to also kill his mother.
