Recap / Crazy Ex Girlfriend S 4 E 16 I Have A Date Tonight

Go To

Rebecca, Josh, Nathaniel, and Greg prep for the dates, while the other characters start betting on them.

Songs:

"Love's Not A Game" (sung by David Hull and cast)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of "Luck Be A Lady Tonight", from Guys and Dolls.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Among the causes of death listed on the death pool board are "A sink dropping on his head while he was fixing it" and "Electrocution due to faulty DJ equipment" for Josh, "Kitchen fire accident" and "Dying of loneliness" for Greg, and "Trampled by elephants at the zoo" and "Dying of loneliness" for Nathaniel.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Parodied. White Josh pretends to sternly upbraid everyone for betting on the outcome of the dates, and then says "JKLOL! Let's do this!" and cheerfully joins in. Thoroughly lampshaded in the lyrics:
Kevin: Love is not Olympians / Sprinting down courses
Heather: They’re our dear friends / They are not horses
Daryl: Their love is pure / Groom meets bride
Maya: So we’d never soil it / With a death pool on the side

Tropes:

  • The Bet: Heather, Paula, and Valencia initially just bet money on Rebecca choosing Nathaniel, Josh, and Greg respectively, but they inadvertently rope the rest of the supporting cast into an increasingly convoluted betting pool, including betting on how the bachelors will each die.
  • Book Ends: Josh invokes this with his own summer camp-esque date with Rebecca, saying that it feels like he's bringing them full circle.
  • The Cameo: "Weird Al" Yankovic as the hot air balloon rental guy. Doubles as a One-Scene Wonder, with an overtone of realism (after all, a pressing need to go to the bathroom may really be a concern when up thousands of feet in the air).
(with full polka flourish) '"Please don't poop in my balloon!"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Rebecca and Greg's didn’t go on any date, and because of that, the bet of who Rebecca will end up with didn't go through to the end, meaning the betting is off, so all of their friends did not make any money from betting on their friends and coworkers' love life.
  • Shipper on Deck: Heather, Paula and Valencia all have strong opinions on who Rebecca should end up with.
  • Shout-Out: Rebecca's final dates are all aptly compared to The Bachelor.
