"This is really the only half hour in the week they let me do anything; the rest is pretty much Canadian Idol."

A Plot: Lacey and Wanda start a running group to train for a fun run, but Lacey finds that she can't keep up. Brent ends up "joining" the group as well, but just drives along in his car, defeating the purpose.

B Plot: Hank gets a job as a crossing guard and goes way overboard with it, annoying everyone in town with his antics.

C Plot: Oscar schemes his way into handicapped parking plates and takes great pleasure in abusing his new parking privileges, while Emma is upset at him for doing so. However, they both soon change their opinions when Oscar discovers that everyone is pitying him for being "handicapped", while Emma discovers how nice it is to always park close to everything.

Tropes Referenced:

  • Bullying the Disabled: An accidental example by Hank; when Oscar wants to cross the road he's guarding, Hank makes sure to loudly announce to everyone passing by how he's not giving special attention to Oscar crossing the road because of his disability, as it's his job to help everyone cross, including the disabled. This leads to Oscar joining the Fun Run just to prevent any similar statements being made about him.
  • The Cameo:
    • One by none other than the at-the-time Canadian Prime Minister during the Cold Open.
    • Singer Jann Arden makes an appearance joining the running group in an Imagine Spot.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: During the race, the guys give Lacey terrible, not-at-all-motivating advice while she's struggling. Then, when she finishes the race over tired and out of breath (and immediately after Oscar has received a hero's welcome), she is completely ignored.
  • Damned by Faint Praise:
Hank: You know, I've been thinking, I don't contribute to society.
Brent: Sure you do. You're a morale booster. By contributing nothing, you make everyone else feel good about themselves.
  • Gilligan Cut: While upset at Hank considering crossing guards and actual police an Interservice Rivalry, Karen states that there's a reason she wears her badge, which makes Wanda ask where she left it before running with them. Cut to Corner Gas, where Karen's looking for her missing badge, and acknowledging that the only thing worse would be losing her gun...and then cut again to the police station, where Karen finds her missing gun, and Davis comments that the only thing worse is losing your badge.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Wanda when she's running. Karen uses this to amuse herself.
Karen: Hey Wanda, have you ever wet your pants on the job?
[Wanda smiles and gives a thumbs-up]
  • Interservice Rivalry: Hank believes that enforcing crosswalk safety puts him on the same level as Karen, to the latter's annoyance.
  • My Greatest Failure: Hank ends up leaving his crossing guard job out of shame that he was highly tempted to abandon his duty during the Fun Run in order to ride along with Brent, Davis, and the doctor.
  • Obfuscating Disability: This is how Oscar is able to get the handicapped plates, though he wasn't very convincing. Not that it mattered, since the doctor seemed willing to give them to pretty much anyone who asked. Emma fakes a limp when she is forced to park in a handicapped space due to there being no other spaces available, but drops the act once she discovers that she really likes parking close to things.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot:
Oscar: I want to run in this thing with you guys.
Wanda: Okay, but Lacey's kinda slow.
Lacey: [yelling] I'm faster than a lame old man!
[everyone at the race stops and stares at Lacey]
    Lacey: [sheepishly] Sorry.
  • Perspective Reversal: Early in the episode, Oscar is proud of himself for conning his way into handicapped plates, while Emma thinks it's ridiculous because there's nothing physically wrong with him. By the end of the episode, however, Oscar hates the fact that everyone thinks he's a feeble old man and wants to return the plates, while Emma has gotten used to using handicapped parking spaces to be closer to stores.
  • A Rare Sentence: In The Tag, Brent feels odd at stating he's sorry that his father is re-abled, after Emma complains how his involvement in the Fun Run led to the handicapped plates being revoked.
  • Shout-Out: Wanda and Lacey's running practice parodies the Latin definitions from the old Wile E Coyote And The Roadrunner cartoons.
  • Title Drop: The Fun Run is the titular event where Dog River citizens run a lap around town for charity.
