Tropes

  • Acting Unnatural: The flooded bathroom may have gone undiscovered by Calvin's parents for much longer if Calvin didn't do such a horrific job of acting like everything was fine when he went to get some buckets.
  • Bad Liar: When confronted by his father on what he was doing, Calvin tries to claim the faucet handle blew off on its own, then that Hobbes did it, and then that aliens did it.
  • Cyanide Pill: After attempting a plumbing project that goes horribly, predictably wrong, a frantic Calvin starts looking for cyanide in the bathroom medicine cabinet in order to avoid having to face the wrath of his parents.
  • Do-It-Yourself Plumbing Project: Calvin tries to fix the leaky faucet but doesn't turn off the water before doing so. He can't reattach the faucet because of the high-powered water shooting out, so the bathroom ends up flooded ankle-deep before his dad arrives and turns the water off.
  • Implied Death Threat: After Calvin's dad turns off the water and finds his son hiding behind the shower curtain, he calmly tells Calvin "It's the end of the world."
  • Man-Made House Flood: Calvin's attempts to fix the leaky faucet result in the bathroom flooding.
  • Only Sane Man: Hobbes clearly thinks it's a bad idea for Calvin to try to fix the faucet by himself, then tries to advise him on how to correctly do it. Calvin ignores him at every turn, with predictable results.
  • Speak in Unison: Calvin's parents point at each other and shout "Your turn" when they overhear Calvin Acting Unnatural upstairs. Dad ends up getting drafted to investigate.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Calvin tries to fix a leaky faucet and floods the bathroom. While trying to fix it, he starts "innocently" humming and casually mentioning he's looking for a bucket: "La da dee doo, I think I'll get a bucket...doo dah de doo...nothing's wrong, ba da dum...just need a bucket to hold some...stuff." The parents, not fooled, both look at each other and say, "Your turn!".
