Recap / Borderlands 2 Captain Scarlett C 04 Two Easy Pieces

Go To

"So, the legends say that whoever gets all four pieces of a mystical compass will find the lost treasure. I've got a piece, because I'm awesome, but Sandman has one, too. Head to Hayter's Folly, kill Sandman, and get his piece of the compass. Sounds good?"
Scarlett

After meeting Scarlett, she gives you the first proper mission: go to Hayter's Folly, southeast of Wurmwater, and locate and kill Sandman, the owner of the second piece of the compass.

Of course, he doesn't make things easy for you, as he's located deep inside an area full of water, Crystallisks and pirates all going for your blood. And when you find him, he's accompanied by Big Sleep, a big, hulking Goliath.

Upon defeating Sandman and Big Sleep, Sandman drops an ECHO communicator revealing that Hyperion is still operating and that they have the third part of the compass. So you had back to Wurmwater and meet Scarlett to turn the mission on.

The level takes place in the Hayter's Folly area, which is also host to the sidequests "Grendel", "Message in a Bottle" (Hayter's Folly) and the post-story quest "Master Gee the Invincible". In addition, it houses the challenges "Playing Chicken In My Sleep", "Master of My Domain", "Wet Reward" and, of course, "Cult of the Vault".

This mission, the related sidequests and challenges, and the Hayter's Folly level itself, show examples of:

  • Anchors Away: Big Sleep, a King Mook version of the Anchormen, uses an anchor to attack you.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: When reaching Sandman, he contacts you via your ECHO in order to tell you he's going to kill you, your friends and your family. Scarlett tells you to ignore him.
  • Big Sleep: The King Mook version of the Anchorman enemy is called The Big Sleep. He works for The Sandman.
  • Brick Joke: When Hammerlock gives you the quest "Grendel", at one point he tells you that the creature ripped off the face of a friend of his, Jesse. When you turn on the mission, it turns out there's no need to attach the face back into Jesse... because he's dead.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: After you kill Sandman and Big Sleep, Scarlett tells you that she can finally read the last issue of "Crimefighting Frog" which, of course, is about a frog who fights crime.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Upon reaching Hayter's Folly, Shade contacts you via your ECHO telling you that he hacked into it just to see you killing people, as otherwise he'd be bored.
  • King Mook: Big Sleep is the "king" version of pirate Anchormen.
  • Optional Boss: The sidequest "Grendel", given to you by Sir Hammerlock, is about facing and killing the eponymous creature.
  • The Remnant: After picking up Sandman's ECHO recording, you learn that Hyperion's still operating after Handsome Jack's own demise, and they have the third part of the compass.
  • Superboss: Master Gee the Invincible, a beefed up Pirate fought at the "Hayter's Folly" level after completing both the main story and having killed Hyperius the Invincible, and which costs 8 Eridium units.
  • We Have Reserves: The reason Scarlett doesn't go toe-to-toe with Sandman:
Scarlett: If you're wondering why I'm sending you to kill Sandman rather than doing it myself, first of all, good question. Glad to see you, you know, taking the initiative. Second of all, Sandman's pretty strong, and you're expendable as hell, so, good luck!
  • We Used to Be Friends: Halfway through the main mission, Scarlett tells you that Sandman and her used to be best buds until they stumbled upon Blade's treasure, then she tried to backstab him and he shot her in the leg.
