Recap / Barney & The Backyard Gang E5 "Campfire Sing Along"

Go To

After hearing a bedtime story about a family that goes on a camping trip, Tina wishes she could go camping and dreams about going on a camping trip with Barney and the rest of the Backyard Gang. Barney takes the gang through different fun experiences from pitching tents and looking for animals to having a picnic in the woods. They even explore a cave where a bear lives. Back at the campfire, songs are sung around it and everyone learns how to make S'mores. After the trip is over, Tina wakes up and realizes it was all just a dream - and a magical one at that.

This video contains examples of:

  • Apocalyptic Log: "I'm Being Eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex"
  • Bears Are Bad News: Subverted. Barney and the kids wind up exploring a cave that is home to a bear and upon realizing it, run out as fast as they can. Said bear turns out to be a Beary Friendly type who happened to be awoken from his nap. When Barney and the gang encounter him later on, they startle the bear as much as he startles them.
  • Camping Episode
  • Chekhov's Classroom: While playing with a turtle, Tina gets lost in the woods. She suddenly remembers Barney's advice from earlier about getting lost: stay where you are, hug a tree, and blow your whistle. These help Barney and the rest of the Backyard Gang find her.
  • Familiar Soundtrack, Foreign Lyrics: Tina and her mom sing "I Love You" in both English and Spanish.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: The video takes place within Tina's dream and ends just after she wakes up. The one thing that hints at it being more than that is a butterfly that flies out of her camping book (and Barney's wink).
Tina: Now that's what I call a dream!
  • Rotating Protagonist: The first four videos imply Michael and Amy are the main characters, as they are set at their house and it is mentioned that Barney lives with them. Both this video and the next one open with Tina, who seems to be the new owner of the Barney doll, though it is never made clear if she is merely borrowing Michael’s Barney or if there is more than one Barney doll.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Adam does not appear in this video and is never mentioned. He is replaced by another Asian kid named Jeffrey, who is never seen or heard from again after this, nor is he given a proper introduction like Derek in the previous video.
