Recap / American Dad! S2E4 "Con Heir"

Go To

After Stan's father dies, the family meets his real father, Jack Smith. He tells Stan that he's part of a super-secret spy organization and needs his help.

Tropes:

  • Comically Missing the Point: When "Grandpa Smith" collapses from a heart attack, Steve thinks he's playing charades and calls out "dead, lifeless, Lindsay Lohan's eyes."
  • Disappeared Dad: Jack bailed on the family when Stan was young. Because of that, the man who the family knew as "Grandpa Smith" was some guy Stan picked at a Home Depot to play his dad, getting him just three hours before the wedding.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Stan had a complete stranger pretend to be his dad for twenty years. His mother Betty isn't shown at all, even though she had used him for emotional support ever since Jack bailed on the family.
  • Foreshadowing: After arriving in a very cool and dramatic fashion, Jack's first gift to Steve is a snow globe that contains real heroin, a clue that he's not an awesome spy like he claims.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Despite having the man pretend to be his father for twenty years, Stan is completely cold when "Grandpa" dies and unceremoniously dumps his casket into the ground. In addition, while Steve was the only one who seemed to enjoy spending time with his "grandfather," he never mentions him again.
  • I Lied: As it turns out, Jack isn't a super spy but a thief.
  • Likes Older Women: Both Steve and Snot begin dating Gretchen, an elderly neighbor of the fake Grandpa Smith.
