El Spanish "-o": Archie – signing up for unemployment benefits – asks a Hispanic man sitting next to him for a pencil. The following exchange occurs:
Applicant: No hablo inglés. Archie: What I need-o is a pencil-ito so I can fill-o out the form-o. note Necesito un lápiz para llenar el formulario. Applicant: No comprendo. Archie: (frustrated) Forget-to.note Olvídalo.
Driven to Suicide: When Archie gets a job as a custodian over another applicant named Frank – a financial adviser who was laid off three years earlier and has been unemployed since – Frank becomes distraught and is about to jump from a high story window. Archie succeeds in talking Frank down and telling him that he has a lot to live for and that he'll soon find work.
The Precarious Ledge: Archie ends up stuck on the ledge after police help Frank back into the building.
Story Arc: Events at the end of this episode – an amorous Archie wanting to make love with Edith, but then his gall bladder begins to flare up and cause him pain – will lead into the follow-up episode, Archie's Operation, where he is still on furlough from the Pendergast Tool and Die Co. but is recalled at episode's end.
