"1-Adam-12, 1-Adam-12, please respond to a 10-101 ... sighting of tropes seen in this episode":

  • Determinator: Reed refuses to stop looking for his partner in the park, even after being told by Mac to concentrate his efforts elsewhere.
  • Foreshadowing: Prior to the accident Malloy and Reed had been dealing with a faulty two-way radio, which meant they had to repeat several transmissions back to dispatch.
  • Hope Spot: A false one, when a young man comes upon the injured Malloy, who is in a state of semi-consciousness. Malloy begs for help, but instead the man gloats that he was involved in a deadly robbery a few days earlier and was hiding from the police at the park ... this before he breaks the radio and takes his shotgun (which Malloy had disassembled to use as a splint) and walks off, figuring its better to let Malloy to lie there and die.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: While pursing an armed robbery suspect in a city park, Malloy loses control of his car and crashes at Griffith Park, seriously injuring the veteran officer. The (already faulty) two-way radio becomes disabled, taking out his only means of communication. Then another armed robbery suspect, who had been hiding in the same park the last several days, comes upon Malloy pulls the mike out and takes his shotgun. Figuring he'll probably go into shock and die anyway, that guy leaves Malloy there. Malloy musters his last ounce of strength to jimmy up now-exposed wires to signal an SOS using Morse code. Reed – who convinced Mac to allow him to search the park more thoroughly – is able to find his fallen partner and literally save his life.
  • Once for Yes, Twice for No: The two-way radio is further damaged in the crash, and then when a vagrant pulls off the mike, it's the only way Malloy can communicate: tapping the exposed wires together.
  • Parting-from-Consciousness Words: After Reed finds Malloy, the injured officer rallies enough strength to utter "Partner" before finally passing out.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Whether the two armed robber suspects were ever caught is left to the viewer's imagination. One of the bad guys involved in a supermarket robbery ran off on foot (the other didn't get away, as Reed caught him almost immedaitely); and another involved in an unrelated incident, who had hidden out at the same park where Malloy crashes the squad car. However, this takes a back seat to the drama of Reed and Mac searching for Malloy.
