Basic Trope: Garlic harms vampires.

  • Straight: Vicky the Vampire touches a clove of garlic and is burnt by it.
  • Exaggerated: Vicky sees a clove of garlic and falls down screaming.
  • Downplayed:
    • Vicky powers weaken slightly after she eats garlic.
    • Vicky isn't directly harmed by garlic, but finds the smell nauseating enough that she tries to avoid it.
  • Justified:
    • Vampirism is a form of blood disease in the setting, and the allicin in garlic interferes with its spread.
    • Vampirism triggers an allergy to garlic or sensitivity to its scent, similar to how lyme disease triggers an allergy to meat.
    • Garlic is a wholesome, healthy (and tasty) plant with preservative effects, and vampires are devils of hunger and corruption piloting barely-preserved corpses. Garlic is spiritually repulsive to vampires in the same way rock-and-roll music is to preachers.
  • Inverted:
    • When Vicky touches a garlic plant, it withers away.
    • Harry the Vampire Hunter is burnt by garlic.
    • Garlic makes Vicky stronger.
  • Subverted:
    • Vicky is hurt by garlic, but her friend Victor the Vampire is not- it turns out that Vicky just happens to have a garlic allergy.
    • Vampires spread the rumor that vampires hate garlic in order to trick their prey into seasoning themselves. Lemon pepper and barbecue sauce as "vampire repellent" have yet to catch on.
  • Double Subverted: But Vincent was only pretending that he wasn't hurt in order to distract his enemies from his weakness.
  • Parodied: Harry is a Chef of Iron and fights vampires with garlic bread.
  • Zig Zagged: Vicky is hurt by garlic, but Vincent isn't- but he was actually lying to cover up his weakness. But then Vicky reveals that it was all a decoy, to distract Harry from her true weakness: beetroot.
  • Averted: Vampires suffer no ill effects from garlic.
  • Enforced: "How do we show that this character is a vampire without being anvilicious? I know! Let's have him with an aversion to garlic!"
  • Lampshaded: "Well,I may be a creature of the night, but at least my breath will alway be minty fresh..."
  • Invoked: Vampires get to pick their own weaknesses, and Vicky chose garlic, figuring it was a slightly better option than sunlight.
  • Exploited: Harry slips garlic into Vicky's food (blood?), in order to weaken her so she can be captured.
    • Harry coats his weapons in the stuff for that extra anti-vampire kick.
  • Defied: Vicky rubs garlic juice into her hands every day, in order to build up a resistance to it.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "The vampires in this are weak to vegetables? I thought they were supposed to be all scary and dangerous!"
  • Implied:
    • Vicky is shown holding a clove of garlic. In the next scene, she has a visible burn on her hand.
    • Alice is known for munching on garlic. When she gets into an elevator with Bob, Charlie, Daniel, Edgar and Vicky, Alice's bad breath garners reactions of disgust from everyone, with Vicky bolting out at the first opportunity.
